Revs score new infielder

The Revolution purchased the contract for Southern Maryland infielder Jermy Acey, 28. To make room for Acey on the roster, the Revs released Anthony Manuel. York has also traded backup catcher/infielder John Purdom to the Camden Riversharks for future considerations.

A career .312 hitter, Acey has experience playing second, short and third. He's never risen above Class A during his career, but he hit .341 in 34 games in the Mexican League -- considered an equivalent to Triple-A -- this year.

Acey may not be the answer at short, but at least the club is making a move. Something needed to be done after the Revs situation at short deteriorated in a little under a week.

York lost two shortstops earlier this season to major league organizations. Unable to fill the void created by the signings of Brandon Pinckney and Danny Sandoval, York has struggled to find a fielder able of playing short everyday.

Matt Rogelstad appeared to fill the role when he moved there full-time on June 20, but he committed three errors in the first two innings of a July 17 game against Lancaster. And he committed two errors Wednesday. Earlier this week his backup, Manuel, booted two balls in the ninth inning to allow Southern Maryland to rally to tie the game and the Blue Crabs eventually won it in the 11th.
