Updated: Latest list of Atlantic League rosters

Seguignol.jpg
In the final week leading up to the Atlantic League’s spring training, many teams are finalizing their rosters for camp. A few big surprises are apparently going to land on the Lancaster roster according to the Atlantic League transactions page. Barnstormers manager Butch Hobson continued to retool the roster, bringing in former big leaguer Fernando Seguignol (pictured above showing the Chunichi Dragons his “AHRGHHHH” face in the ’07 Japan Series).
Even though misspellings and left-handed pitchers have showed up as right-handers on the league’s infamous transactions page — it remains the league’s transactions page. So we have to assume an announcement is coming. (Maybe.) If it does come to pass, this should be good news for Lancaster. EDIT: Transactions page fail. I’ve been notified that Horacio Ramirez is definitely not a Barnstormer. He made the opening day roster for the Salt Lake Bees, the Angels Triple-A affiliate.
Seguignol appeared in the Atlantic League with Newark last season, playing in 28 games and batting .337 with 17 runs scored and 34 hits. He signed with the Orix Buffaloes of Japan’s Pacific League.

  1. John says:

    whats the story on Grimes?

  2. Jim Seip says:

John, thanks for the question. I expect the Revs to announce that they’ve signed Grimes in the coming days.
He didn’t get signed by a MLB organization in the offseason but he was open to returning to York. Just like I don’t think Hagen signed papers earlier this month, teams often wait to announce some of their signings instead of dumping all the names in one press release.
Now will Grimes earn a contract from a MLB organization this season? We’ll see. But if he puts up good numbers early, there’s a good chance an organization will finally take notice.

  3. John says:

I hope he gets his well deserved shot at affiliated ball, but I am anxious to see him in the Atlantic league again. Thank you for the udpate!

  4. trent says:

Do you think tim raines jr will pop up on any of these atlantic league rosters?

  5. Jim Seip says:

If he wants a spot, I’d think he’d have one.
Even though he struggled with Somerset he did have a combined 11 homers, 8 triples and 44 stolen bases after he turned it around in Newark.
His father is managing in Newark (now in the Can-Am League), so that’s an option. But TRJ could be playing in a higher league. True, he would be a superstar in the CAL — and who can put a price on playing for your father? — but I think he has aspirations to play in an organization again. If he does, the Atlantic League offers more exposure than the CAL when it comes to veteran players.
He played in Newark in 2010, so the then-Newark owner Frank Boulton had first rights to sign Raines. That means Raines probably had his pick to sign with either of Boulton’s remaining Atlantic League clubs: Bridgeport and Long Island.
If Boulton or TRJ took a pass on Bridgeport and Long Island, it doesn’t look like he has too many options left. York isn’t an option (I think they are full when it comes to position players), but I’m not sure the status of So. Md., Camden or Lancaster.
