Mail bag: Another week, another winner

Question: Does DownTown have a girlfriend? Answer: I let him sit next to my girlfriend for a minute once. He made her cry. I don't think it worked out.

Tom won this week’s random drawing of question askers and gets himself a pair of free Revs tickets.

As usual, before we answer this week’s questions, we’ll be giving out even more free tickets next week.

But we have to make you work for them. Our weekly feature — the Inside Pitch mail bag — relies on YOU, dear reader, and if you participate, you’ll get a chance to win two vouchers to a future York Revolution home game. Here’s how it works:

  • Post your Revs question in the comments section of this blog post. You have until 3 p.m. Friday, June 15, to submit a question. Posting your comment is your entry into a random drawing for two vouchers to a future York Revolution home game.
  • Check back on the blog on Saturday: We’ll answer one of the submitted questions, and we’ll announce which random commenter won the ticket vouchers.
  • So comment on this post, ask a question, and impress Youngstown Will. You just might win some tickets.

Be creative with your questions: Something you’re curious about, our insight into the team, predictions for the season or trivia that you haven’t been able to answer. Questions with a “yes” or “no” answer aren’t any fun, and the better the question, the more likely we are to answer it! Check back each Saturday to see the latest delivery from the mail bag. We’ll keep it going until we run out of tickets or you run out of Revs questions. And now some answers …

Last week’s questions:

Question: How long had plans been in the works for York to get its very own baseball team?

Answer: That, past champs, important dates, Revs’ first and more can be found at the York’s minor league history tab of this blog.

Question: Where is Youngstown?

Answer: Home to recovering alcoholic and middleweight world champion Kelly “The Ghost” Pavlik. Or, if you’re just looking to get there, follow the smog trail.

Question: Any fun events planned at the stadium this summer? Besides games that is.

Answer: Camp Day is July 18 . Before the 11 a.m. game on the field, the stadium is hosting “the largest game of Capture the Flag ever in York County.” Also, SpongeBob SquarePants will be at the ballpark that day. That sounds fun.

If you like beer or wine, the second annual Yorktoberfest is happening again at the stadium this year. Although that’s not until Oct. 27-28.

Question: Does DownTown have a girlfriend? Philly Phanatic has Phyllis, shouldn’t DT have a main squeeze?

Answer: He’s got a little “Mini-Me” that follows him around sometimes, although I’m guessing that’s either an odd platonic relationship, or perhaps an offspring of a “squeeze” I don’t know about and it was just his weekend of custody.

I did let him sit next to my girlfriend once, but they didn’t seem to hit it off. Something about her having an unexplainable fear of mascots turned her off. She cried, so I don’t think it worked out.

You can rent him, though, if you’re interested.

Question: Do teams in the Atlantic League have a salary cap? and what do the top players earn a season?

Answer: I stole this from our archives here, but according to Jim:

“The Atlantic League does not have a hard salary cap, but teams are encouraged to follow a guideline to keep player salaries below $3,000 a month.”

Turns out they can make considerably more playing in Mexico or other international organizations. Ramon Castro made “probably $8,000 or $9,000 a month” in the Mexican League in 2011,  York manager Andy Etchebarren said in an article dated March 19, 2011.

More from Jim’s previous writings:

“The reason players stay in the U.S. playing for a low salary is the allure of returning to affiliated baseball.

“When players go overseas, they have little to no opportunity to pitch in a major league organization this season.

“Although a player can parlay a solid career in an international league into a future contract with a major league organization, when they fly to Korea or Taiwan they know they won’t be returning to a major league organization until the end of the season.”

Question: What does the Revolution offer to draw Students in to the games?

Answer: They have a few promotions during the school year where games started at 11 a.m. to accommodate the kids’ school schedule.

School’s finished now, but there’s another student promotional game this Monday against Southern Maryland. From the Revs’ website: “School’s Out Blowout:  Students get tickets for just $5, if buying online just enter the promo code student12 before you check out!  Deal is available in the box office and day of game as well.”

And if you’re not a student but still like deals, it’s also Hatfield Dollar Dog Night, where hot dogs are just a buck all night.
