York Revolution: December 2006 Archives

Heard the official word.

The Atlantic League expansion draft is over.

And the York Revolution have selected seven players. The names of the players are not being released because York's front office is still attempting to contact some of them.

But the good news for area baseball fans is York should have its first signed players sometime next week.

For a more comprehensive story and a breakdown of where and how the Revolution front office is finding players, read the Sunday News.

That fence, that fence ...

First came news that Sovereign Bank Stadium (some assembly still required) would have a short left-field porch. Ownership hoped it would be 309 feet down the left-field line, matching the dimensions of Baltimore's old Memorial Stadium.

Then team execs said, well, maybe it wouldn't quite be 309.

But they had a monster fence in mind to cut down on cheap homers. And this fence would be taller than the world-famous one at Fenway Park.

So how do they hope to combat that fence?

Some background and trivia on the York Revolution’s 2007 coaching staff:

Chris Hoiles (Manager): Was 16th in American League MVP balloting in 1993. Hit two grand slams in one game in 1998. Hit walk-off grand slam to give Orioles a 14-13 win over Seattle at Camden Yards on May 17, 1996.

Minor is a hitting coach???

The list of incoming coaches for the York Revolution reads like a game of “Which name does not belong?

Chris Hoiles: A franchise guy who was strong in the clutch. Tippy Martinez and Al Bumbry: Solid role players who carved out solid niches in Orioles lore.

And Ryan Minor: The guy who was supposed to be the Birds’ savior in the post-Cal era, only to swing a weak bat (.177 career) against a tide sweeping his team into a decade-long losing streak.

He’s now the Revolution’s hitting coach.

So we’re starting an office pool for this year’s team batting average. Any takers for .177?

Constructing the Monster

The York Revolution Web site is currently displaying an interesting set of photos detailing the construction of the Green Monster-like wall that will rise out of left field at Sovereign Bank Stadium in York.

It looks like its going to be quite the signature element of York's new baseball stadium.
