The York Revolution signed Travis Hake to a one-year deal today.
He becomes the 10th player on the Revs roster, and third middle infielder signed by the Atlantic League expansion team.
Hake has been put in a position where he will be fighting for his professional baseball life in spring training. Barring a serious injury, one of the three middle infielders will be forced to sit the bench or switch positions. Perhaps there will be a platoon situation, but very few everyday players want to split time.
For those that may argue a team needs to protect itself from injuries ...
Travis Hake has agreed to terms with the York Revolution, according to team officials.
Hake is the one local player everyone expected to be on the Revs roster. Drafted by the Revs in the expansion draft, Hake is a Red Lion High graduate who still lives in York County.
But the Revs have already signed middle infielders Vic Gutierrez and Rayner Bautista, casting some doubt whether Hake will be playing second or third base -- or perhaps used as a platoon player.
This could be a tough situation for Hake, 30.
The Revs have six new players.
No big blockbuster names. No former major leaguers.
But here's a look at the new guys, and some of their career highlights.
Anybody else wonder where Travis Hake is going to play this season?
The Revs own his rights. But York has already signed two middle infielders, Vic Gutierrez and Rayner Bautista.
Manager Chris Hoiles doesn't see a problem. He likes having the flexibility to platoon players. We just wonder if the players feel the same way.
It will be interesting to watch the personalities of the players at short and second, and see if they buy into Hoiles' philosophy.
The York Revolution announced Darrell Henry will be the radio play-by-play announcer for every Revs game this season on Newsradio 910-AM WSBA.
Henry's age is the one shocker. He is 22.
But he used that to his advantage.
He's willing to drive a player to the airport at 5 a.m. He's willing to do the grunt work. And from listening to his York College broadcasts on 1350-AM WOYK, it's clear he's talented.
And, oh yeah, he's a York County native.
We're waiting to see if there's a single negative about hiring Henry.
