The end is near!

York finally completes its 11-game stretch at Campbell's Field. It couldn't come soon enough for a team that's lost its last four games to the Riversharks.

Opponent: Camden Riversharks
Start time: 7:05 p.m.
Location: Campbell's Field
Probables: Camden LHP Anthony Ferrari (2-1, 3.26 ERA)
York ... after losing Baerlocher, you guessed it ... TBA

Camden 3, York 1

Revs manager Chris Hoiles and Danny Bautista were ejected.

York lost its fourth straight.

And another player, Matt Dryer, left the game. This time it's not clear if he was injured. The team termed it "unspecified" reasons.

It hasn't been a good week to be a Rev. That is unless you are Ryan Baerlocher or Adam Thomas and headed out of town.

The game was York's 10th straight game in Camden.

Camden's hitting star: Denny Abreu 2-for-4
Camden's pitching star: Kevin Walker 8 IP, 4 hits

Talk about bad timing.

Travis Hake is expected to miss three to four weeks with a broken bone in his hand. Hake left Wednesday's game after sliding head first. After returning to York, doctors confirmed he had broken a bone. Revs play-by-play announcer Darrell Henry described the injury as a clean break.

Hake's injury came on the same day the Revs lost pitchers Ryan Baerlocher and Adam Thomas to affiliated clubs.

But the bad news keeps coming.

Location: Campbell's Field in Camden, N.J.
Probables: York RHP Matt Hirsh (0-2, 9.31 ERA)

Pitchers Ryan Baerlocher and Adam Thomas picked a find day to leave town.

The Revs lost their third straight game, and the latest loss came in brutal fashion.

The Riversharks scored a 6-3 win thanks to one, really, really long inning.

The Riversharks scored three runs in the third inning on just one hit. Their secret? They needed three consecutive walks, one error and an RBI single.

Camden's star: Greg Powell 8 IP, 1BB
York's star: Danny Bautista 3-for-4
Tough-luck award: Matt Ford 5 2/3 IP, 6 BBs

Here's a version of the story that will appear in Thursday's York Daily Record.

The York Revolution had great news for two of its players and bad news for the rest of the club.

Major league organizations purchased the contracts of starter Ryan Baerlocher and closer Adam Thomas. The moves, announced Wednesday, leave the Revs without their best starter and best reliever.

The Atlanta Braves assigned Baerlocher to Triple-A Richmond. The Oakland Athletics assigned Thomas to Single-A Stockton (Calif.).

One odd side note: During the cramped spring training conditions at Lakeland, Fla., Thomas and Baerlocher shared a locker. Now they depart the league on the same day.

The Revolution lost two of their best pitchers Wednesday.

Ryan Baerlocher was assigned to Atlanta's Triple-A affiliate in Richmond, and Adam Thomas was assigned to Oakland's Single-A affiliate in Stockton (Calif.).

Here's a look around the Atlantic League at players who had their contracts purchased by affiliated clubs and professional leagues outside the country.

York loses two great arms

Two of York’s best pitchers are headed back to affiliated baseball.

And yes, OK, that means York loses two of its best pitchers.

Bad news for the team. Great news for the players.

But really, you knew this was coming …

York will be the road team and bat first, unlike its neutral-site games at Camden where it assumes home-team status. The series marks the final three games of an 11-game run in Camden.

Spot starter Matt Hirsh is set to start his second game of the season. The former Astros and Cardinals prospect is looking for his first win since 2005.

Opponent: Camden Riversharks
Location: Campbell's Field, Camden, N.J.
Probables: York RHP Matt Hirsh (0-1, 11.12 ERA)
Camden LHP Kevin Walker (1-1, 1.77)

* Revs return to Camden's Campbell's Field to play an away game against the Riversharks. This should not be confused with the Revs neutral-site games at Camden, where York plays the role of "home team." Low points at neutral site games this season have included no national anthem, crowds in the 40s, and crews using leaf blowers on the concourse DURING the game.

Camden 7, York 2
The Revs (9-9) are having trouble keeping a winning record.

To recap the week: win, win, loss, win, loss.

Camden (10-10) hasn't had much success playing above .500 either, but one of these teams has to finish the series on a winning note.

Hit man: York shortstop Rayner Bautista 2-for-3, 2 RBIs
Pitching star: Camden righty Greg Powell 7 IP, 1 ER

Danny Bautista knows how to celebrate a birthday.

The newest member of the Revolution clubbed four hits and knocked in three runs in York's 7-5 victory against the Camden Riversharks at Campbell's Field in New Jersey.

Not bad for a fella who turned 35 Thursday.

Bautista enjoyed a magical first 48 hours with the Revs. He's batted .857 (6-for-7) in his two Atlantic League games.

Key contributor: Travis Hake 2-for-5, 2 runs scored
Key pitcher: Chris Steinborn (1-2), forced three DPs

Well, look who's back in town?

Campbell's Field is the Revs home away from home until York's Sovereign Bank Stadium can be completed. And the Revs have enjoyed their stay, winning five of seven in Jersey. But the Riversharks are going to be the home team Thursday night, not the Revs.

Opponent: Camden Riversharks
Game time: 7:05 p.m.
Location: Campbell's Field in Camden, N.J.
Probables: York LHP Chris Steinborn (0-2, 5.82 ERA) and Camden LHP Costello (0-3, 4.58)

The Long Island Ducks lived up to their reputation as the Atlantic League's biggest spenders. The Ducks used four pitchers in a 4-3 victory against the York Revolution at Campbell's Field in Camden, N.J.

The one footnote.

All four Ducks pitchers had major league experience.

After Willie Matos led off the ninth with a pinch-hit homer, former Reds closer Danny Graves retired the final two batters for the save. Newly acquired Danny Bautista led York by going 2-for-4, and Travis Hake knocked in a pair of runs.

Here's the good news.

The York Revolution have a little more depth on their roster after signing former major league outfielder Danny Bautista. Bautista played for four major league teams, and retired during spring training in 2005 because of a lingering ankle injury. The injury had affected his back and knee, so he hung it up at the age of 32 with a career major league batting average of .272.

But now he's back.

And here's the bad news.

This could be a big game for York.

The Revs have won two straight series and two straight games. The team finally looks together, and a win against a loaded Ducks club is only going to help York's confidence. But for the second straight day the Revs face a former major league pitcher.

Opponent: Long Island Ducks
Game time: 5:05 p.m.
Location: Campbell's Field in Camden, N.J.
Probables: York RHP Dave Gil (0-0, 0.00 ERA) and L.I. RHP John Riedling (1-0, 2.12)

All right, so the streak ended.

Revs fireballing closer Adam Thomas finally allowed a run in his 10th appearance of the season, giving up an unearned run in the ninth inning of the Revolution's 5-3 win against the Ducks at Camden's Campbell's Field.

But he recovered to pick up his fifth save of the season. With a 93 mph heater, and a staters' arsenal of pitches, Thomas is one of the players who should get picked up by an affiliated club sometime soon. But he's not alone.

In the hunt

kazu.jpg

After a bad start -- and we mean bad -- the York Revolution finally posted their first winning record in franchise history. A 5-3 win against Long Island allowed York to improve to 8-7.

But here's a shocker, the Revs are in position to challenge Somerset for the South Division title. (York's one game back in the standings entering Wednesday's games.)

OK it's still early ... 15 games down 111 to go.

But the Revolution look like a different team from the 0-4 disaster that started the season.

York wins in Lancaster

York 2, Lancaster 1

LANCASTER -- The York Revolution beat the defending Atlantic League champion Lancaster Barnstormers 2-1 in the first meeting between the two clubs.

York Revolution first baseman Matt Dryer clubbed a two-out solo homer in eighth inning to put the Revs on top for good.

After watching York struggle during the first three games of the season in Bridgeport, Conn., it's clear the Revs are a different team now. They have enough players so that manager Chris Hoiles can make strategic moves. And the late arrivals have played well.

Defending league champion Lancaster looks to be in trouble.

Gary Sutton joins the Revolution

The York Revolution has announced that long-time WSBA radio personality Gary Sutton will join broadcaster Darrell Henry for all Revolution game broadcasts in York, as well as selected games in Lancaster this season, beginning with this weekend's three-game War of the Roses series in Lancaster.

When the York Revolution visit the Lancaster Barnstormers tonight at Clipper Magazine Stadium, it will mark the first time since 1959 that the cities' will have met in a minor league baseball game.

Another Rev sent packing

The York Revolution lost their second player this week. Opening Day starter Wayne Franklin has signed a contract to play in Taiwan and has left the Revolution.

The left-hander went 2-0 with a 7.04 ERA in three starts for York. He allowed 12 earned runs and struck out 11 in 15 1/3 innings of work.

Revs director of baseball operations Adam Gladstone said teams from Taiwan usually purchase the contracts of two or three Atlantic League players every season.

"We're proud of it," Gladstone said about the signing. "It means we're going after the right type of players."

Tike Redman wasted little time warming up to International League pitching, going 1-for-2 with a triple in his debut for the Norfolk Tides in Game 1 of a doubleheader against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Tuesday night.

Redman played seven games for the York Revolution, batting an Atlantic League-best .464 before earning a minor league contract with the Orioles. Signed Monday, he was in uniform for the Tides games Tuesday night.

Redman batted leadoff for the Tides, going 2-for-5 in the doubleheader.

Another opinion on York stadium and parking

| | Comments (0)

David Blechertas of York sent us this letter on this week's hot topic:

The York Revolution and the city made a mistake by not providing adequate on-site parking for baseball games and instead relying on existing city infrastructure to support parking needs. Here are the top 5 reasons why:

1. The Market Street parking garage is aging rapidly and even now its structural integrity has been a major concern for the city. What are the city's plans to address this?

2. The Philadelphia Street garage is already heavily overbooked with the city often selling the same space three times a day. Nights where the Strand and the Revs both are using the garage will result in a lack of parking for downtown residents who rely on the garage as their own "driveway" (and pay the city heavily for it!). Right now the Strand alone can easily fill the garage. "Strand vs Revs" is not far away.

Orioles sign Revolution's Tike Redman

otike.jpg

One of the York Revolution's best players is already gone.

Revs outfielder Tike Redman become the first member of the team to be signed by a major-league organization when was picked up by the Baltimore Orioles late Monday night.

The Orioles assigned Redman to Triple-A Norfolk. He will join the Tides when they begin a homestand in Norfolk today.

Redman will forever be remembered as the first batter in Revolution history, as he was in the leadoff spot in the Opening Day lineup in Bridgeport on May 4.

He batted .464 (13-for-28) with six runs scored, five RBIs, three walks, a double, and a stolen base in seven games with York.

Historic night

For the first time since 1969, York has a winner.

The York Revolution clinched the first victory in franchise history, downing the Camden Riversharks 17-6 at Campbell's Field.

It's the first time a minor league baseball team from York won a game since the York Pirates won the Eastern League championship in 1969.

Wednesday's edition of the York Daily Record includes a story on the game and a story about WSBA's radio and Internet coverage.

Clemente connection

| | Comments (0)

A sign on the right-field fence at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard honors Roberto Clemente and his No. 21.

It’s a round sign most clubs use to retire and honor former players.

Clemente never played in Bridgeport, but it does have a link to the Hall of Famer.

Besides having a sizeable Latino population (more than 30 percent) in the city, Bridgeport
resident Juan Vargas played with Clemente in the minor leagues.

Vargas went on to establish a youth baseball league in the city. And a large statue of Clemente was placed at Bridgeport’s Seaside Park along the Long Island Sound.

The “Friends of Clemente” gather every year at the park on New Year’s Eve to remember
the anniversary of his death.

A few bright spots

| | Comments (0)

OK, on Day 1 the Revolution didn't look horrible ... except for that never-ending, feels-like-it's-still-going sixth inning.

The Revs had some pop.

They scored eight runs on 11 hits, but couldn't do a thing after Bridgeport scored 12 runs in the sixth.

Here are some standouts from the franchise opener.

Tough, tough start

| | Comments (0)

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- The York Revolution took it on the chin in their franchise opener Friday night at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.

Up by five runs, York imploded in the sixth inning, allowing Bridgeport to score a team-record 12 runs.

The Bluefish scored a 15-8 victory.

On the board

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Welcome to the Atlantic League.

After a rough first inning, the Revs took care of all their offensive firsts with one swing.

Trailing 2-0 after one inning, first baseman Nate Espy crushed a 2-0 pitch over the green batters' eye in dead center field.

First homer, first hit, first run, first RBI -- all in one at bat.
