Rough roads cost drivers big bucks

Rough roads are costing drivers hundreds of dollars more a year, according to a news release.

A new report called "Rough Roads Ahead: Fix Me Now or Pay for It Later" has been issued by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials and TRIP, a transportation research group.

The report analyzes data from the Federal Highway Administration and states that 33 percent of the nation's major highways are rated in poor or mediocre condition.

In Pennsylvania, the rough roads are costing state drivers up to an extra $500 a year in vehicle operating costs, according to the report.

York isn't included in the report, but Lancaster and Harrisburg are. The additional cost per motorist is $288 in Harrisburg and $384 in Lancaster. Philadelphia has the highest amount: $525.

The full report is available here.
