It’s a roller derby work of art

Co-worker and friend, Bill Warner, the features editor over at the Lebanon Daily News, recently interviewed a New York artist who features roller derby players in his art. The artist, Yoichiro Yoda, draws inspiration from mixing new icons with fixtures and people of the past. His works will be displayed in Lebanon in April. Read an interview with Yoda here.

Preparing for roller derby practice– watch what you eat!

OATMEAL.jpgNot many people really get the physical demands of roller derby. There’s a lot more to roller derby than just skating around wearing short skirts, for instance. When I get to practice with my team, the Black Rose Rollers, we’re expected to run and hit as fast and furiously as possible. I used to try and go running before practice for an extra work out. However, when I would get to derby practice later that night, my legs would get stiff and sore pretty quickly. Worse, my energy was completely sapped.
I have to be careful about what I eat too. No pizza or chicken tenders allowed before practice. Trust me, you don’t want to learn that the hard way. Usually I stick with oatmeal or Slim Fast the night of practice, so my stomach won’t get upset during endurance runs. I remember one night someone ate sushi before practice and ended up yakking in the bathroom between drills.
Lisa Plumeri, a dietitian from Memorial Hospital in York suggests eating a meal high in carbohydrates (because they’re easier to digest) about two to four hours ahead of athletic activity. Check out more of her nutrition advice for athletes here.
What do you eat before roller derby practice? Share your suggestions!

Roller derby events are happening everywhere

divas_rockstars.jpgI missed the game this weekend, but according to the DC Rollergirls Facebook page, the DC All-stars were beaten by Lancaster’s Dutchland Rollers on Feb. 5. The final score was 82 to 110.
Looks like the Dutchland Rollers are skating off to a great start this season. Their next game is at 5:30 p.m. on March 12 at the Overlook Activities Center, 2040 Lititz Pike, in Lancaster. They will be playing Atlanta Dirty South Derby Girls from Atlanta, Georgia and Steel City’s B-Unit from Pittsburgh. Check out my interview with one of the Dutchland Rollers’ referees, BiRoller Disorder, here.
If you need more derby action, this weekend Harrisburg Area Roller Derby is having an interleague bout at 6 p.m. on Feb. 13. See the game at the Olympic Skating Center in Enola. Get tickets for $8 at harrisburgarearollerderby.com/.
