If you have plans for Saturday, cancel them. Then, stop by the 7th Annual Mother Earth Hands-on Harvest Fair at Spoutwood Farms in Glen Rock. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the festival will offer petting animals, local food, arts and activities, a children’s village and performances by local musicians.
The theme for 2011 is Fresh Local Solutions (to Life’s Persistent Questions). But what interested me most on the Spoutwood website is the fair’s emphasis on new ideas, collaboration and community learning. It says:
What are we harvesting? Since this is a Harvest Fair, held during the traditional harvest season, we are concerned with harvesting the bounty of the good Earth: fruits and vegetables, animal products, and fiber. But we are also concerned with harvesting ideas, ideas about how we can live a more balanced, healthy, and harmonious life with the Earth and our fellow creatures. This harvest is reaped, not with sickle or knife, but through exhibits, presentations, lectures, and above all, networking.
That is something I can get behind — an event that not only provides a full day of fun that will interest all ages, but also works to change the community for the better.
If you go, here are the details: Spoutwood Farms is located in Glen Rock, about 15 miles south of York. There is parking at a lot 3/10 of a mile from the farm, and directions can be found here. Parking is $5 per car; admission is $5 for adults and free for children ages 12 and younger. The event will be held rain or shine. And for the technology-addicted — there’s no cell service at the farm, so if you’re meeting up with others, plan ahead!
