Walk A Mile in Her Shoes at Millersville University

FlipSide file; Walk a Mile in Her Shoes participants take to the streets of York in their heels in April 2010.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. On October 19, 2011, a crowd will gather to walk one mile in women’s high-heeled shoes throughout Millersville University to protest rape, sexual assault and gender violence. (York and other area communities have hosted similar events in the past.)

The opening Walk A Mile in Her Shoes ceremonies and on-site registration are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. outside of the Student Memorial Center. The walk will begin at 5:30 p.m. Men, women, and children are invited to participate and walk-on registrants are welcome. Men are encouraged — but not required — to walk in women’s shoes and participants are being asked to obtain a minimum of $10 in sponsorships. We encourage participants to bring their own high heels; however, a limited number will be available at the event to those who do not have their own.

For details, call 872-3841 or email womenscenter@millersville.edu. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Domestic Violence Services of Lancaster County.

October is also: Breast Cancer Awareness Month

One Response to Walk A Mile in Her Shoes at Millersville University

I missed it this year – having just found your post. I would love to participate in the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event next year and I hope this doesn’t sound too trivial but if anybody out there with some experience with the event can recommend a really comfortable heel that doesn’t kill the feet on a long walk I’d really appreciate it. Thanks. And thank you for the heads up on the event.
