Eating organics — and how to afford it

That 7-pound pumpkin became 10 cups of pumpkin puree after a few hours' work -- all for $3.73.

Over on the Twenty & Change blog a few weeks ago, Bethany Fehlinger wrote a post titled “Too poor for healthy food? I think not!” In it, she argued there are ways to work around the higher costs of organic or local foods. After I read her post, I tweeted an example from my trip to Central Market York that morning:

@sarahEchain Real-life example: 7lb pumpkin, 4 zucchini, 2 squash, 5 carrots, celery bunch, an onion, quart potatoes, 10 pears @CentralMktYork = $19.26″

When I went to make pear-applesauce that weekend, I realized she’d actually given me 14 pears, not 10. Now, I admit I don’t know if all (or, honestly, any) of it was organic. But it was local. And it was all healthy.

On Wednesday, the Paul Smith Library of Southern York County will show you how easy it can be to buy, grow, cook and save on healthy food. The session begins 7 p.m. at the library, 80 Constitution Ave., Shrewsbury, and is free and open to the public. Just don’t forget to register — call 235-4313.

Presenter Cara Achterberg will teach you “how to make your own peanut butter, granola, instant oatmeal, bread, yogurt, ice cream, and other staple foods, and start living your healthy, happy, and homemade life today,” according to the press release. She blogs about organic living at www.kidfriendlyorganiclife.blogspot.com, if you want to read up on her before you go.
