Reader challenge: Put back one luxury item this week

Thanks to Shannon Faircloth of Dover for sending me this inspirational message last week. Will you take her challenge?

I went to Kennie’s Market yesterday for my weekly shopping. They have some really good tea I love before bed and it’s $5. I was on my way to the register when I saw a table they have set up filled with bags of food for the local food bank. That bag of food is enough for 1 person to eat for about 2 days and it costs $5….the price I would have paid for my luxury tea. It made me realize that my tea is worthless when someone else is out there starving. I put the tea back and bought one of the bags. I am better off than I was 3 years ago, and I forget at times what it’s like to be without food. There was a crate full of those bags out in the lobby that people had purchased, but I know it’s not enough for the amount of people that are in need this year. This is a topic that I feel is not pushed enough in the media. Can you possibly make it a FB topic for your readers to see and hopefully have it influence them to put 1 of their luxury items back for a week and buy a bag of food for someone who’s starving?

  1. Shannon Faircloth says:

Just because someone is poor, does not mean they want to be. Everyone’s story is different. I have been homeless and lived in a shelter. I know first hand what it’s like to be at rock bottom and have nothing but the clothes on my back. If it were not for kind folks that donate clothing, food, and money to help me with the resources needed to get back on my feet to support myself, I never would have. Just because someone is poor, it does not mean they are not trying! And by you making the comment you made, it’s apparent you have never lost your home, your car, your family, your clothes, EVERYTHING. Perhaps you should live a day in a poor persons shoes to realize what they have gone through before your judge and make rude comments. I asked Kara to publish this because if it weren’t for the kindness of other folks, I would not have brought myself out of that situation. I understand that yes, there are people that abuse all the generosity and it upsets me as well, but there are tons more people who genuinely NEED help because they don’t know what else to do or who else to turn to and that’s why I want this awareness brought out there. I am so thankful for the folks who helped me and I want to return the favor. That $5 goes a long way and means more than you know.
