One of my favorite parts of the holidays is the music — I know, I’ve mentioned it more than once during the countdown. If Christmas were only about family, music, lights and candles, I’d be pretty OK with it. Maybe a few Christmas cookies, too. But sometimes I feel like presents are more stress than they’re worth.
This was especially true Sunday night, as I struggled with my circa-1950s sewing machine. My grandma sewed maternity clothes on it when she was pregnant with my mom, and I think it’s a great piece. Until, of course, it decided not to work, and then I thought it was a great piece of you-know-what. A present that should have taken 20 minutes — tops — turned into a four-hour saga interlaced with bursts of profanity.
If you’ve had similarly frustrating blips this season, you can let it all out today: It’s Bah Humbug Day. It’s your free pass (today only!) to take a break from holiday cheer and indulge in a little Scrooge ‘tude. Whatever your holiday frustration may be, stew on it for a minute, shout “BAH HUMBUG!” and be done with it. You can get back to the 24/7 hustle and bustle tomorrow. Of course, if you’re a real Grinch, beware: Apparently, you only get 12 shouts per person. Use them wisely.
Smart is showcasing something different each day of the holiday season. Some days it will be an event, such as a play or craft bazaar. Other days it will be a recipe you can serve during Christmas dinner or a suggestion for entertaining the kids. We’ll give tips to survive the holidays — all 61 days of them.
