Read Across America

What was the last book that you read? (I just finished reading Kissing Games of the World by Sandi Kahn Shelton)

What was the last book that you read to your child? (Green Eggs and Ham -  last night)

I love to read.  My husband loves to read. Of all the things that we can accomplish in raising our child, we believe one of the most important is instilling a love of reading. Consequently, we read at least one book each night before bedtime.  The boy’s favorites, anything Dr. Seuss. In fact, we use Green Eggs and Ham to illustrate to the boy that he should at least try different foods because you never know what you’re going to like. (Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. But the fact that the boy will say to me, “Remember Green Eggs and Ham mommy,” is enough to know I’m doing something right.)

Each year in celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2nd, the National Education Association (NEA) kick-off their Read Across America (RAA) campaign.  The Read Across America campaign focuses on motivating children to read.  Research has shown that children who are motivated and spend more time reading do better in school.

As a major sponsor of RAA, Target will be holding their annual Dr. Seuss Storytime on Saturday, February 25th at all Target stores from 9am-11am. The story time features the reading of The Lorax and free goodie bags and fun activities.

The boy wakes up at 6 am on Saturdays.  Who’s going to join me at the East-End Target at 9:30? Anyone know if there are other RAA events going on in the area?
