Over on the Smart magazine Facebook page this week, we asked if anyone had any insider advice on staying mosquito-free — without the harsh chemicals. From recipes to links to local shops, everyone had ideas.
Smart magazine: Does anyone have any good non-chemical tricks to keeping away mosquitoes this time of year? Does Skin So Soft really work? — Kara
Cassady Krinock: I have tried a lot of different ways and honestly the only thing that works for me is OFF. I hate the smell and it burns my skin for a few seconds..
Kelley Gibson: We have two little girls who attract mosquitoes and get bites like crazy, and have had no luck finding a natural repellent that works as good or better than chemicals. This year, we planted more herbs and I’m going to try the natural spray recipes I found on this blog, so hopefully they work! http://www.accidentallygreen.com/2011/06/natural-ways-to-repel-mosquitoes.html
Debbie Doughty: We use Off , but I was told to burn a vanilla candle that would help too.
Smart magazine: Thanks for the tips. Let me know if your natural sprays work, Kelley Gibson! Cassady Krinock and Debbie Doughty, I’m in the same boat. I hate putting on OFF, but it works. — Kara
Smart magazine: Homemade Insect Repellent Recipe:
10-25 drops essential oil. Try lavender, rose geranium (for ticks), coriander seeds, peppermint, cajeput and citronella
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 tablespoon aloe vera gel (optional)
Combine the ingredients in a glass jar; stir to blend. Dab a few drops on your skin or clothing. – Court
Smart magazine: Try vanilla extract. http://www.yorkblog.com/smart/2012/04/24/your-new-favorite-beauty-product-could-come-from-your-kitchen-pantry/ –Emileigh
Kristie Hoffman-Rineer: Peppermint oil is supposed to work as well as lemongrass. We use Jāsön quit bugging me. It’s a natural insect spray. It doesn’t smell the greatest, but it works for us. Deet, PABA and paraben free. I buy it at our local Naturel Choices.
Kristie Hoffman-Rineer: *natural*
Angie Hanzel: A recent over abundance of unprocessed coconut oil prompted a Google search for uses and one of them is repelling mosquitoes!
Karen Moyer Hendricks: I have always found Skin So Soft lotion to work. Another tip: the herb tansy naturally repels mosquitoes and you can keep a pot of it on your patio, porch, etc to keep them away.
