After the York Daily Record/Sunday News ran our series Fat Battleground in 2010, York County residents teamed up to form Let’s Move York. The grassroots initiative aims to motivate the community to lead more active lives and improve their health.
Let’s Move York conducted Q&As with community members who’ve recently made changes to better their lives. We will feature the group’s If I Can, You Can Series on Smart
If I Can, You Can: Stories of York County residents who have adopted healthy habits and feel better as a result.
Name: Stan Brown, who at 78 years old and working every day at his orchard business, recently decided he and his wife needed to take charge of their health.
What made you take the first fitness step? “My wife’s urging and arm twisting? I love my life and want to walk in my orchards forever!”
What motivates you to keep going? “My wife and I are a team. We go together to Weight Watchers and the gym.”
Could you do the same thing at home? “No – I love people! We enjoy the camaraderie of our Silver Sneakers class. We’re a friendly group who have a lot of fun together. The power of community is astounding.”
What’s your typical workout program? Two days a week at Silver Sneakers and starting to work on some equipment.
What is your healthiest habit? “We don’t smoke or eat a lot of meat — we all must learn to cut portions in half!”
How do you keep going when you want to quit? “I’m not going to quit! This is my life for the rest of my life!”
What’s your favorite splurge? “Ice cream — we don’t have it in the house. We treat ourselves — dinner out is sometimes steak and ice cream split in half.”
What gets in the way of you fulfilling your fitness goals? “Winter is the best time for me to start. Summer is really busy, but I’ll walk a lot in the orchards.”
Is there any part of fitness that intimidates or frustrates you?
“No — I know my limitations (bad knees). The instructors are most helpful in classes and the gym.”
What are you most proud of? “That we both started. My wife pushed me into this welcoming lifestyle. We’re really proud of ourselves at our age!”
Do you have any words of wisdom for others who are just getting started?
“I see many overweight people. We both wish we could convince them how destructive obesity can be for themselves and their children. It truly affects their quality of life. If my wife and I can make these changes, anyone can!”
