Five books to help with green living

Beach trips, car trips, time inside with the windows wide open — these are all perfect spots to be reading a book. With an unusually warm year in my opinion (heat advisory before July?), now is a great time to read about green living.

Here are five books to add to your list:

  1. “Go Green, Live Rich” by David Bach. Bach is best known for his Finish Rich brand under which he publishes motivational financial books. In this book, Bach examines every way a person can not only help the world but how they can get rich doing it.
  2. “No Impact Man” by Colin Beavan. The writer recorded in his blog his family’s attempts to live a zero impact life for a year in New York City. This project lead to a documentary, a book, a No Impact Experiment and many other projects under the same premise.
  3. “The Backyard Homestead” by Carleen Madigan. This book gives advice to readers about turning their green space into something sustainable. I noticed on Facebook the resurgence of freedom gardens and homeowners using all available space to grow edibles and raise animals for consumption. This book might spark some ideas for York County homeowners.
  4. “Do It Gorgeously” by Sophie Uliano. Author of “Gorgeously Green,” this book and brand give readers tips on how to make less toxic and less expensive products for home and body. Uliano shows readers how to be gorgeous and fabulous without breaking the bank or the Earth.
  5. “Silent Spring” by Rachel Carson. Considered to be a founder of the contemporary environmental movement, Carson was a marine biologist and and conservationist more than 50 years ago. Her book “Silent Spring” is still relevant and is considered a launching point for the movement, as well. “Silent Spring” documented detrimental effects of pesticides on the environment, and led to the banning of DDT in 1972.

What is your favorite green-living book?
