That’s what Philip Treacy is known for and that’s what he put down a London runway Sunday.
But, you probably won’t ever purchase any of his designs. You might not even consider them hats. That’s because these creations are completely bizarre.
It’s clear that Treacy was going for an artistic expression rather than street style when he made this show for Fashion Week.
The show was Michael Jackson-themed, paying homage to Jackson’s 80′s fashion choices including his white glove and Thriller jacket. It was also hard not to ignore the child-like elements incorporated in the looks, including Mickey Mouse ears.
Lady Gaga opened the show in some kind of pink mosquito net — I mean pink veil. But, unlike red carpet events, she wasn’t wearing the most interesting ensemble. That could go to the smiley face, or the face-obstructing disco ball.
Treacy, who last showed his designs 13 years ago, had this to say to the New York Times:
“Living with these clothes in a vault has given me emotional energy and I believe that the hats are a futuristic way of showing the most beautiful clothes I have ever seen. I was thinking of Napoléon’s words ‘with baubles that men are led.’ These clothes were designed to fill a stadium of 80,000 people.”
