Fashion tip: When shopping, don’t judge clothing by what it looks like on the hanger. It’s advice my mother gave me growing up. Whenever I would say that a dress or top wasn’t worth trying on, she would tell me to try it on — I fell in love with a lot of unlikely pieces this way. So, I always tell people to try at least one thing on that they wouldn’t otherwise — because, sometimes you just can’t judge clothing by the way it hangs off of a rack.

Skincare tip: Going to bed with makeup on, makes your face age 7 times faster. Be sure to remove all makeup before going to sleep so that you skin can breath and relax, causing you to feel fresher in the morning.

Makeup tip: Match your foundation to your skin color. If you can’t get a sample or test the product on the spot, keep your receipt. Most stores will allow you to return the product. To test, swipe a small amount on the side of your face and then blend. If the foundation matches it will disappear into the skin. Go outside and check in natural light. Lancome is one of my favorite lines of makeup and they offer a 10-day supply of foundation for you to test out.

I’ve never seen my mom without her nails painted — seriously, the woman is the queen of the perfect manicure. She gardens, cooks and washes dishes by hand, but always makes sure that her nails are clean and chip-free at the end of the day.
She taught me that you always look more polished with a little bit of polish on your fingers. I guess you never know who you’re going to be shaking hands with. Oh, and she always encouraged me to wear earrings — I guess it’s the little things that can pull an outfit together.

I always use olive oil to take makeup off my face. I learned the trick from some lovely Greek women I met while on vacation in Crete. Olive oil is a natural moisturizer and it doesn’t make me break out either. The Greek ladies I met also told me they also use olive oil as a lotion and for a special hair treatment. One other natural beauty tip I love: Breaking out? Eat carrots. The vitamin A is great for fighting pimples, and bonus, loads of beta carotene in carrots will help protect you skin from sun damage.
