Our 12-year-old daughter, Sarah, sometimes gets ideas that I brush off. “Oh, I want to make a movie.” “Oh, I might want to be a sketch artist someday.” They’re generally vague things without a lot of practical concept behind them.
When she sticks to an idea for more than a day or so, though, we start to listen and really work with her on it. Sometimes, though, she gets even more self-directed, like she did when we were trimming our house for Christmas.
I didn’t pay too much attention when she sat down with a notepad and pencil and said, “I’m going to write my own ’12 Days of Christmas.’”
It was easily an hour or so later that she said, “Wow, Day 11, almost done!” And I thought… wait, what is she doing?
