As a renter in downtown York, my outdoor space is limited to my fire escape.
That makes it hard to have a garden — even in containers — because, as it turns out, landlords, firefighters and safety personnel in general don’t want you cluttering your emergency exit route, should your front door be blocked by flames. Go figure.
It’s part of the reason why I so greatly enjoyed our Container Garden Chronicles last summer (stayed tuned for this year’s plans!). But the film “Truck Farm” offers a different solution through the story of Ian Cheney, a New York City resident who grows a garden in the bed of his pickup truck.
I’m fairly sure my Honda Civic isn’t set up for a backseat garden, but I love the challenge to be creative in a small space. For example, herbs have done surprisingly well set inside my apartment, close to a sunny window.
Community members can attend a screening of “Truck Farm” put on by York College’s Sustainability and Environmental Studies minor at 7 p.m. Jan. 31. Held in the Collegiate Performing Arts Center on the YCP campus, 441 Country Club Road, Spring Garden Township, the film is free and open to the public. It will be followed by a discussion.
