Zumba classes don’t usually have a serious undertone. However, one class at the YWCA York will call to end violence against women and girls throughout the world.
The YWCA York will host a free Zumba class 6:30 p.m. Feb. 14 to support One Billion Rising and V-Day — campaigns to end violence against women and girls.
According to One Billion Rising, one in three women worldwide is raped during her lifetime.
V-Day began 15 years ago on Feb. 14 and encourages people to participate in dance strikes “in solidarity, purpose and energy,” to “shake the world into a new consciousness.” In 1998, Eve Ensler, author of “The Vagina Monologues,” started V-Day with a group of women in New York City. V-Day events can be held any day February through April. Each year, 5,800 events are held annually.
This year, V-Day launched One Billion Rising in an effort to get 1 billion women and people who support them to dance on V-Day’s 15th anniversary.
