Whether you’re having a casual get-together with friends or a blowout bash, consider serving more than just beer.
We spoke to Nadine Riess, director of Harrisburg’s Capitol Bartending School, and got her tips for crafting some seriously festive cocktails.
Mix up a batch of these drinks for your next barbecue and you’ll be feeling patriotic in no time!
Snow Cone1½ ounces raspberry vodka
3 ounces Sprite
½ ounce grenadine
½ ounce Blue Curacao
Fill glass with ice. Add vodka, then Sprite. Drizzle grenadine over Sprite, and wait for grenadine to sink to the bottom of glass. Add Blue Curacao on top.
Nadine’s tips: “Be sure not to mix the ingredients! Layer each ingredient instead. Don’t over-do the amounts of grenadine or Blue Curacao, because it can become too sweet. This is actually a very refreshing drink.”
Red, White and Blue Sangria
2 bottles dry white wine
1 cup orange-flavored cordial (such as Triple Sec or Grand Marnier)
Juice of 1 orange
Juice of 1 lemon
Simple syrup to taste (suggested starting amount is ¼ cup, depending on dryness of wine and personal preferences)
Chunks of fruit, such as raspberries, strawberries, blueberries
Mix everything together and let sit for 2 to 4 hours before serving.
Nadine’s tips: “Don’t add blackberries to the wine; they can stain the drink. Throw a few blackberries in each serving glass, instead.” Feeling really patriotic? “Cut strawberries into stripes, and use star-shaped cookie cutters to cut apples.”
Rocket½ ounce Blue Curacao
½ ounce raspberry vodka
Dollop of whipped cream
Shake Blue Curacao and vodka over ice. Then pour into slender shot glass. Top with whipped cream and grenadine drizzle.
Dress up your nonalcoholic drinks, too! Freeze raspberries or blueberries in ice-cube trays with a bit of water, then pop into glasses of lemonade.
Or, try this tip from foodnetwork.com: Take serving glasses and rub them with lemon juice. Pour red and blue Pop Rocks onto a plate, then coat the glasses with the candy.
