Show your love all year long

Just so you know, the stomach flu that is going around stinks.  Yes, I got the stomach flu.  It put a major dent in all the things that I needed to get done.  How was I supposed to get homemade Valentines done for the the preschool kids when all I could do was moan that my head hurt and whimper like a puppy?  Stupid stomach flu, Bah!

Luckily, I planned ahead. Well, sort-of.  I spent most of my time prior to getting sick on Pinterest looking for cool Valentines.  (Yes, I am addicted to Pinterest. Yes, you should go on Pinterest. No, I do not receive any money for recommending Pinterest.)  I decided on doing Heart Blossoms and Super Hero Lollipops before the boy pulled a Typhoid Mary.

You’re asking, “Why is this goofy girl writing about Valentines.”  Three reasons:

Don’t let food allergies come between you and your jelly doughnut

These jelly doughnuts look amazing. You can't even tell that they are allergen-free!

Every now and then, I get hit with emails that seem to have uncanny timing….

This was the subject line:

“Allergy-Free Beignets for Mardi Gras by Elizabeth Gordon”

I was just bemoaning the fact that the frozen doughnuts in the organic aisle are almost perfect for Ava … except they contain eggs. So I was toying with the idea of whipping up some homemade ones. All I needed was a recipe.

This is where the email came in. I was intrigued enough to open it up. This is what it opened with:

With Mardi Gras just around the corner, what better way to celebrate than with beignets! Elizabeth Gordon’s new book “The Complete Allergy-Free Comfort Foods Cookbook” includes a fantastic jelly donut recipe that is essentially a gluten-, dairy-, soy-, nut-, and egg-free beignet.

It’s over after I see the words jelly donut. I die for jelly doughnuts. I just ate two the other night in the newsroom. Nomnom. Add to the fact that this recipe is free of all Ava’s allergens? Get outta here. I gotta try it.

The lovely PR lady was kind enough to send me Elizabeth Gordon’s recipe. Fortunately, there are only two ingredients (sorghum and millet flour) that aren’t a part of my pantry already, so I’m super stoked to try this out. I’ll post pics of my efforts at a later date.

But wait, there’s more! Click here!

File this soup under Ah-mazing!

Kitchen magic…it doesn’t happen very often for me. For as many recipes I try, I must sadly admit that I am not a good cook; I just get lucky sometimes. I’m a much better baker. My love of desserts helps with that.

I tried a new recipe the other night and I am going to file it under “ah-mazing!” Every once in a great while you make something that tastes like you ordered it off the menu of a really great restaurant. That was me with a recipe for Lasagna Soup, which of course I found on Pinterest. It originally came from the blog A Farmgirl’s Dabbles. Also worth noting, the recipe is fairly simple, despite the long list of ingredients.

Without further adieu… Here’s the recipe for you to try in your own home!

40 Days to a Personal Revolution: Day 7

A week into her personal revolution journey, Jennifer Markle is thinking, “What did I get myself into?”

Her greatest challenge has been food. The program calls for the elimination of white sugar, white flour, caffeine and alcohol from her diet.

“I didn’t realize I ate so poorly until I had to look at the label of everything I buy,” said Markle, recalling her first trip to the grocery store after starting the program. “I left with just a few raw ingredients. Everything I picked up in the store had stuff in it we can’t eat.”

Although Markle found limiting herself to raw, unprocessed foods, she did have some nice moments sharing her new diet with her daughter.

French parents must know something I don’t

Pamela Druckerman's new book "Bringing Up Bebe," catalogs her observations about why French children seem so much better behaved than their American counterparts. (Emmanuel Fradin for The Wall Street Journal)

Co-worker Teresa Cook handed me a section of the Wall Street Journal recently, and I knew I was in for a treat.

Teresa brings me the best articles. She was the first one to show me the “Tiger Mother” column, (which led to this rant by my fellow mama Amy Gulli.)

This time, the headline in The Wall Street Journal read “Why French Parents Are Superior.” I rolled my eyes, but Teresa assured me this one was different.

The author, Pamela Druckerman, an American living in Paris, had me as soon as she described going out to eat with her toddler.

“Bean would take a brief interest in the food, but within a few minutes she was spilling salt shakers and tearing apart sugar packets. Then she demanded to be sprung from her high chair so she could dash around the restaurant or bolt dangerously toward the docks.”

How does she know what it’s like to venture out in public with Charlie, my 2-year-old Tasmanian devil?
