Manchester Twp. military mom sends 100,000 books through Operation Paperback

Kathy Weigel Operation Paperback volunteer

Kathy Weigel of Manchester Township has been volunteering with Operation Paperback, a nonprofit that sends gently used paperbacks to military members and families, since 2001. In April, she sent the box containing her 100,000th book. (DAILY RECORD / SUNDAY NEWS — KATE PENN)

Tucked away in an upstairs bedroom, Kathy Weigel sits at a table stacked with paperbacks: nonfiction war stories, western novels, science fiction, fantasy and the rare romance novel. And, always, James Patterson.

“Every list that comes from anybody has James Patterson on it,” the 58-year-old Manchester Township resident said with a laugh.

Weigel labels the books with an “Operation Paperback” sticker that includes the nonprofit’s web address, sorts the books by genre and packs them 40 or 45 at a time into a box.

Learn to make the most of your tiniest green spaces

Condo and apartment-dwellers, stop seeing green when you look at friends’ gardens, and start, well, seeing green.

Even if your outdoor space is just a concrete balcony, it can be a lush, welcoming garden, said Brian Waltersdorf, registered landscape architect with Hively Landscapes.

“Between plants, containers and furniture and wind chimes, there are kinds of elements that can make it a place,” Waltersdorf said.

Of Pots and Pens: Oat and flax soft pretzels

IMG_20130501_031918Soft pretzels are probably my greatest junk food temptation. If we’re at the movies, a ball game or  just at the mall, I’ve got to get one. They’re versatile and can be sweet, savory or anything your creative little mind imagines. But they are also a huge calorie hit. And let’s be honest, project blue dress seems to be successful, but I still have a month until our friend’s wedding takes place and I have to zip up that dress.

So let’s keep things slim.

I found this recipe on the Lean Green Bean blog, which I tend to gravitate to when I need a comfort food makeover. This are great because they’re nutty and wholesome, but still fluffy enough to satisfy that soft pretzel craving.

To see more photos and the recipe, visit Of Pots and Pens.

Video: Create DIY garden markers

DIY garden markers

(Video still by Sarah Chain)

Last year when I began my container gardening adventures, I had seven pots — three tomatoes, three bell peppers and one cucumber.

I set them in a neat row — right to left — outside the York Daily Record/Sunday News offices. Because otherwise, I’m very sure I wouldn’t have remembered what was in what pot.

And I only had seven plants!

Of course, once your plants start growing, it gets easier to keep track. But if you’re sowing seeds this weekend — in the ground or in a starter container — keep an eye on what’s going where with these easy DIY garden markers.

Best and worst looks from the Met Gala Red Carpet

The theme was “Punk: Chaos to Couture” and some celebs took the chaos too far — but, others wowed us with how they balanced the ideas.

Here’s are the looks you need to know about:

Dobrey’s gown was the best example of a beautiful ball gown that incorporated appropriate elements of punk. The sweetheart strapless bodice is sexy with a fashion-forward halter strap. The translucent flare of the bottom is feminine. The pop of the skinny pant underneath is the gem design element.

Florists offer helping hand to overwhelmed brides

Cascading bridal bouquets have come into fashion again, with a new name and a fresh look.

“I call it a tailored waterfall. It tends to be sleeker, to have a dramatic focal point,” said Vince Butera, owner of Butera the Florist in York Township.

While cascades reigned in the 1980s and ‘90s, hand-tied bouquets rarely appeared until they started gaining in popularity about 15 years ago. The waterfall look feels new to brides, who are beginning to embrace it.

But modern brides now make choices from traditional to eclectic in color and style.

“We’re in this time period where everybody wants to be an individualist,” said Butera, a floral designer who has followed trends since he opened his own business 30 years ago.

Mommy kisses seal the deal with angry toddler

Amelia, right, pictured with her sister Gabriella, recently needed some one-on-one time with her mom.

Amelia, right, pictured with her sister Gabriella, recently needed some one-on-one time with her mom.

For 2½-year-old Amelia, it’s been a tough few weeks, to put it mildly.

I love my daughter with every fiber of my being, but the tantrums, ear-piercing screams and general defiance have reached an all-time high.

Her rap sheet now includes time-outs, and the loss of goldfish, cookies and a ride home. (OK, I waived the last punishment, but only because it was raining when we left school.)

The last straw snapped this past morning, when Mia strolled over to her 1-year-old sister and bopped Gabriella on the top of her head.

Plop.

Amelia whipped her red curls around and stared a hole through my head, as if challenging me to a duel.

Shoo mosquitoes and other pests naturally

Ever swat at your ear, over and over, and then worry people are judging you? In the spring and summer months, that “buzzzzz” from bugs just won’t go away, along with the red bites.

Or maybe you have a colony or two of ants, or maybe some spiders who are making homes around your house and in spaces that used to be safe from these invertebrates. The cat or dog might help a little to clean them out, but that is until boredom gets the best of your pets.

There are ways to combat these warm weather pests without living in a cloud of toxins, and many companies are selling products that are meeting consumers’ needs for being “green.”

Sharon Benford, who works in customer service at Sonnewald Natural Foods, said many conventional products sold in stores that say will help combat insects have a lot of ingredients that aren’t safe.

Benford said there are companies that make products with all-natural ingredients, such as essential oils in cedar wood, peppermint and lemongrass. The natural bases include purified water, coconut oil and glycerin.

Many of these products also are free of parabens and phthalates.

“Stuff in the regular stores would have these in their products,” she said.
