Introduction to a blogger

I have been a Penn State York Extension Master Gardener for 17 years. I’ve been a gardener for much longer than that.

When I was eight years old I created my first garden with the assistance of my paternal grandmother.

For the past 40-plus years I have gardened on a hilltop near Felton. It began as a hayfield. Now mature trees shade a large part of it. The gardens and the landscaping have been in a continual state of change. Large vegetable gardens have been replaced by ornamental shrubs. Herbaceous perennials replaced annuals and now annuals are returning to provide long-season color. The landscape surrounding our home is a classroom, a retreat and a continuing source of pleasure.

I like plants and I like to share what I know about them. I grow them, I write about them and I lecture about them. I maintain a Web site, Sommer in the Garden, about them.
