Topping Trees - Not a good idea.

Since moving to Capital Region in late November, I have noticed a lot of "topped" trees. If you are not familiar with this practice, it is the cutting of large branches in the upper and/or outer tree canopy. I am uncertain whether this is a consumer or tree care industry driven practice. Either way, it causes unnecessary stress to trees. These severe cuts do not heal properly and can serve as entry points for diseases or insects. Attacks from these pests can cause the tree to decay, which means that it has weakened and may become a hazardous tree in time. (Personally, I also find the practice quite ugly.)

A very useful website covers this topic and also discusses many other important tree care topics. Check it out.
