We know your life moves at warp speed. Whether you’re scrambling to get ready for work and send the kids off to school in the morning, or rushing to a last-minute dinner party at night, you can still squeeze in a few minutes to put your best face forward.
Makeup artist Rachel Shoop of the Michael Alan Salon and Day Spa in Springettsbury Township shared a few makeup tips and tricks to help you look fabulous in a flash with minimal effort.
Before you get started
• Always clean skin before you apply makeup.
• Exfoliate skin, especially if your skin is dry and peeling from too much sun or wind exposure, so makeup does not clump.
• Keep skin moisturized; use a moisturizer with sunscreen if possible.
• Make sure you have the right colors. You want to be careful to match your foundation or powder to your skin tone to avoid having a visible makeup line under your jaw.
• Have your makeup and tools together in a drawer or kit for easy access.
• Remember that a little bit goes a long way when it comes to makeup. Keep your look lighter for the daytime. You don’t need to go as dramatic as an evening look.
Tips for a younger face:
Step 1: Use a liquid concealer to cover blemishes and under the eyes. Dab the concealer on in small dots where you need coverage and blend with the tip of your finger. Check for blots and lines even if you are in a hurry.
Step 2: Dust a dual foundation over your face with a brush, not a sponge or pad. This will blend everything together to give you a more finished look.
Step 3: Apply eye color with a finger evenly all over lids for the base color. Use a cream blush and eye shadow combination. There are sticks and pencils that provide one color for eyes, lips and cheeks that work well for no-fuss makeup.
Step 4: Use the same blush/eye shadow product to accent and highlight the top of your cheeks. Dab on and blend.
Step 5: Apply eyeliner to your top lids only. Go darker at the outside of the eye, closest to your hairline, and fade into almost nothing as you move toward the inside of you eye. Use a creamy pencil liner that goes on easier to avoid the heavy line of a liquid liner.
Step 6: Use a darker shadow to accent the eye. Make a “V” with the point in the crease of your eye. Fan the shadow along the top of the lid and where your eye folds. Use a round brush to blend the color.
Step 7: Use a black, thickening mascara and apply to the top and bottom of your upper lashes to make them fuller.
Step 8: Use a lip tint on your lips for just the right amount of color and shine. Tints come in a tube similar to Chap Stick and are super-easy to apply. It is not as heavy as a lipstick or as sticky as a gloss. Look for products with an added SPF.
Step 9: Dust a loose powder over your face to blend your blush and eye color. It will quickly help to set everything for all-day wear. Take the brush past your jaw to avoid the visible makeup line.
Tips for a more mature face:
Step 1: For a more mature face, apply and all-over foundation with SPF for more coverage. Dab on and blend completely with your finders or a sponge.
Step 2: Use a powder blush with a light shimmer on your cheeks. Follow the underside of your cheekbone and fan out to your hairline.
Step 3: Apply a light eye color all over the lid as a base. Go in with a darker shade of the color to enhance the eye bone at the top of the lid. Blend the color together. Contour with the same “V” shape and blend upward at the corner of your eye to pull everything up.
Step Four: Use eyeliner in a shade such as dark green for more mild color. Apply to just the top lids.
Step 5: Apply black mascara to the upper and lower part of the top lashes.
Step 6: Apply gloss with a little color and lots of shine for fuller lips. This is easy and quick. With lipstick, you have to apply lip liner to keep it from smudging.
Step 7: Set everything with a light dusting of powder at the end for the finishing touch.
