Irish whiskey, the leprechaun of top-shelf spirits, is making mischief.

Quality, variety and sales are up, as the fuel for Irish coffee, countless hot toddies and a very fine highball has turned neat for many drinkers.

“More and more people have developed a taste for it,” said Michael Douglass, president of Post Wines & Spirits in Syosset, N.Y., where 15 types of Irish whiskey are sold. “And it’s a little different taste.”

Sure, we’re springing forward. But we’re losing an hour of sleep.

This weekend, most Americans will set their clocks one hour ahead for daylight saving time, which falls on the second Sunday in March. And while an hour may not seem like a huge deal, 32 percent of those surveyed in the National Sleep Foundation’s 2008 Sleep in America poll said they only get a good night’s sleep a few nights per month.

Losing one hour can lead to crankiness, slower thinking and reaction time. The key is taking a few minutes now -- not Saturday before bedtime -- to set the stage.
