Since Dizzy Dean won 30 games in 1934, five National League pitchers have won 27 games in a season.
Only one had 28 wins. Who was he?
Robin Roberts won 28 games in 1952. It was the third season of a six-year span in which Roberts won 20 games. From 1950-1955, Roberts went 138-78 with a 2.93 ERA. He pitched 300 innings in each of those seasons, leading the league five times. During those six seasons, Roberts struck out 2.7 batters per every strikeout and had a 1.094 Whip.
To put that in perspective, Roger Clemens went 101-40 with a 3.36 ERA and a 1.227 Whip during the 1997-2002 seasons. He won three Cy Youngs during that time.
But Robin Roberts never met a Brian McNamee
In case you were wondering, the other four pitchers to win 27 games since 1934 were:
Steve Carlton - 1972
Sandy Koufax - 1966
Don Newcomb - 1956
Bucky Walters - 1939
