Justin Morneau helped the Twins win, sparking one of four Mid-Atlantic losses Wednesday.
We're chock full 'o Sammy.
The Phils suffer a 10th inning knockout.
And there was some bizarre news this morning. Bulldog attacks. Toby Harrah sightings.

Leading Off
Of course we lead off with Slugger Sammy.
The players admit they're not surprised. Here's an excerpt from the Chicago Tribune story.
"(White )Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said supposedly "clean" players like Andre Dawson, Harold Baines and (Frank) Thomas should have their Hall of Fame possibilities upgraded. "I'm proud of my career," Thomas said. "There were three or four guys who were very obvious [steroids users] to the eye.

'"The bottom line is I came up with Bo Jackson, so I saw the biggest, strongest, fastest man ever and all of a sudden everybody was on the same level, and that's impossible."'
Phil Rogers writes about Major League Baseball's anger over the continued leaks. Of course they're angry. Wouldn't you be if someone kept throwing egg on your face.
Howard Bryant says this steroid story should really set off our rage.
Contrarian, or delusional idiot, Rich Hoffman says the Sosa news doesn't change how it felt in '98.
Newsday says Sosa shared a trainer with A-Rod. It also has a photo gallery of the "All-enhanced team."
Regional Roundup
The Mid-Atlantic teams got rocked.

  • The Phillies suffered a 10th inning beat down. Bill Conlin looks at all the former Phillies who went on to broadcast careers.

  • Mark Guthrie struggled. That's expected.

  • Manny Acta's still the manager. Tom Boswell thinks he could be for a while. Shairon Marte pitched well. The bullpen didn't

  • Paul Maholm and the Pirates got rocked.

Best of Rest
There is some bizarre stuff in here today. A Ruben Sierra sighting. A bulldog attack.

  • Chien-Ming Wang has a lot riding on this start - his rotation spot.

  • Dodgers fans held out for a hero into the 10th inning. They got it in Matt Kemp.

  • Trever Miller wants full disclosure of the 104.

  • King Felix showed the Padres they aren't his daddy.

  • The Hot Stone League ponders the All-Star game.

  • Toby Harrah and Ruben Sierra have been voted into the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame. Who voted? Thier moms?

  • Fredi Gonzalez apologizes.

Batter's Eye

  • Kyle Farnsworth missed Tuesday's game after he was bitten by his bulldog.

Today in history
1915 -- George "Zip" Zabel of the Chicago Cubs was called into the game against the Brooklyn Dodgers with two outs in the first inning. He won 4-3 in the 19th inning in the longest relief effort in the majors.

1960 -- Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox connected for his 500th career home run off the Cleveland Indians. Williams, the fourth to accomplish the feat, hit a two-run homer off Wynn Hawkins in a 3-1 win.

1978 -- Ron Guidry of the New York Yankees struck out 18 California Angels to set an American League record for left-handers. Guidry, who struck out 15 in the first six innings, ended with a 4-0 four-hitter.

1993 -- Baseball owners voted 26-2 in favor of expanding the playoffs for the first time in 25 years, doubling the teams that qualify to eight starting in 1994.

The Closer
Pudge Rodriguez has tied Pudge Fisk for the most games caught. We said it before and it's worth repeating, the record would be more impressive it the steroid tinge wasn't there.
The Houston Chronicle reviews Rodriguez' career in photos.
One thing is for sure, Pudge was a joy to watch for quite a long time.
