A fun look at how dominating the Yankees have been

Let's marvel at the Yankees' ability to win over such a long stretch of time.
Here are some things we'll discuss.
Did you ever notice that the Yankees are not as successful when the Grand Old Party holds the White House?
What decades have been kindest to the Bronx Bombers?
How many World Series games have the Yankees won compared to the seven teams that have yet to win a World Series?
We know the Yankees have never had a real World Series drought, but how exaclty do their lean years compare to some other clubs?
How have Yankees managers done when they've been at the helm of other teams?

Defining a dynasty

A dynasty is when the same family/organization succeeds over a length of time with different personnel.
So when a team wins back-to-back World Series it's not quite a dynasty.
However, the Yankees meet the requirments because the Yankees of Ruth and Gehrig gave way to the teams of DiMaggio and Rizzuto, who were followed by the Yankees of Mantle and Berra, who were succeeded by teams of Munson and Jackson who, after a brief respite, were followed by the teams of Jeter and Rivera squads.
Since 1920, there has not been an organization that has so dominated its sport as the New York Yankees.

Dynasty by decade

  • How dominant have the Yankees been since acquiring Babe Ruth before the 1920 season? Let's take a look at it by decade.
    20s
    Three World Series championships
    Six American League pennants

    30s
    Five World Series
    Five American League pennants

    40s
    Four World Series championships
    Five American League pennants

    50s
    Six World Series championships
    Eight American League pennants

    60s
    Two World Series championships
    Six American League pennants

    70s
    Two World Series championships
    Three American League pennants

    80s
    No World Series championships
    One American League pennant

    90s
    Three World Series championships
    Three American League pennants

    00s

  • One World Series championship
    Four American League pennants

    Dynasties and droughts

  • Now let's look at the Yankees' biggest droughts.
Not counting the Yankees' first twenty years, when they often finished in the second division, the Yankees longest stretch without a pennant was 14 seasons. Their longest stretch without winning it all was 17 years.
Compare that to these other teams' longest droughts.

    National League
The Cubs haven't won the World Series in 101 years and have gon 64 seasons since winning the pennant.
It took the Phillies 97 years to win their first World Series and they twice went 35 years between pennants.
The Cardinals are the only other team with at least 10 World Series titles, but they have twice gone 24 years between World Series crowns. It also took them 24 years to win their first pennant.
The Dodgers have six World Series trophies in their case, but had to wait 52 years for their first. Between pennants wasn't as long a wait - just 21 seasons.

American League The Boston Red Sox famously went 86 years between titles five and six. Their longest stretch without a trip to the Fall Classic was 27 seasons. The Athletics have won nine World Series, but had a 41-year drought between pennants and championships.

  • Dumps or dynasties

How about how the Yankees compare to teams that haven't won a World Series.
There are seven of those squads: Mariners, Brewers, Rockies, Rays, Rangers, Nationals, Padres and Astros.
Those teams have combined to win six pennants, five World Series games and 16 division crowns.
The Bronx Bombers, meanwhile, have won 26 World Series, 39 pennants, 127 World Series games and 15 division titles.

    Dynasties and presidents

    • Since 1922, there have been 15 presidents, starting with Calvin Coolidge and ending with Barack Obama.
The Yankees have won the World Series during eight of those administrations. The only presidents who have had terms that did not include Yankee victories were Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George Herbert Walker Bush, George W. Bush and Barack Obama (so far).

    • So yeah, the baseball gods who love the Yankees are definitely not Republicans. The Bronx Bombers have not won a World Series during the last 29 years the GOP has had a representative in the Oval Office. They did start out alright during Republican run years, having won seven World Series among the Coolidge, Hoover and Eisenhower administrations.
However, the Yankees have only won consecutive championships once under Republican rule.

    • Here is how many World Series championships the Yankees won by president.
      John Kennedy (D): 1961-1962: (2)
      Lyndon Johnson (D): none
      Richard Nixon (R): none
      Gerald Ford (R): none
      Jimmy Carter (D): 1977-1978 (2)
      Ronald Reagan (R): none
      George H.W. Bush (R) none
      Bill Clinton (D): 1996, 1998-200 (4)
      George W. Bush (R): none

  • The Yankees have won championships under Miller Huggins, Joe McCarthy, Casey Stengel, Ralph Houk, Billy Martin and Joe Torre.
While each of those men coached other teams, only Joe McCarthy ever reached the Fall Classic wearing a different uniform. He did so with the Chicago Cubs, but that was before he managed the Yankees and he did not win the series that season.
