West York grad Ben Cable likely could not have envisioned a two-game stretch like he has had in the last two Elizabethtown College games.
Cable scored a career-high 27 points in the Blue Jays 70-67 loss at Alvernia College, but the junior wasn’t done there as on Tuesday he threw down 34 in Elizabethtown’s 69-68 home loss to Lycoming College.
The former Bulldog hit 9-of-18 shots from the floor, including 7-of-14 from 3-point range and was 9-of-12 from the free throw line. The 6-foot-2 guard added nine rebounds during the home finale for the 8-15 Jays.
Clarion University has a gem in West York grad Ann Deibert – on and off the basketball court.
The 6-foot-1 sophomore forward was recently named to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District/All-America first team, a recognition which goes to the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
Deibert, a secondary education/English major, carries a 4.0 GPA and is averaging 10.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game for the Golden Eagles. She is team’s third-leading scorer and second-leading rebounder has started all 21 games this season.
As first-team selections, Deibert will now advance to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot.
Two YAIAA graduates, freshman Neal Grudi (Spring Grove) and senior Tyler Zittle (Littlestown) scored key wins helping Shippensburg University wrestling edge Delaware Valley College on Wednesday.
Grudi used a riding time point as the difference in a 7-6 decision at 165 pounds, while Zittle earned a 6-3 decision at 184 pounds, helping the Red Raiders to a 19-18 criteria win.
The match ended in an 18-all tie, but Ship improved to 11-10 on the season by winning via the second tiebreaker – total number of falls and technical falls – thanks to a Simon Rice pin.
New Oxford grad Julia Antonelli is leading the way at Lycoming College this season. The sophomore tops the Warriors, averaging11.4 points and 7.7 rebounds per game, and boasts an .824 (56-of-68) free throw percentage. She has also hit more than half of her field goals this season (86-of-169).
Antonelli had 17 points and 10 rebounds in the Warriors’ win against Arcadia and posted a season-high 23 points in overtime loss to Elizabethtown.
Also at Lycoming (10-of-10), Dallastown grad Chelsea Shearer, a senior, who averages 5.2 points per game. She has led the Warriors in scoring three games this season, including her 18-point performance in a win over Penn State-Altoona.
William Penn grad Kelvin Parker scored a career-high 20 points Thursday night, helping Mount St. Mary’s earn a 64-51 victory over Saint Francis (Pa.).
The freshman Parker, shown above slamming one of his many dunks during his Bearcats days, has started 18-of-21 games this season for the Mountaineers, averaging 7.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.
Three former YAIAA football players received honors from Lebanon Valley College for their 2011 seasons.
Dover grad Colt Zarilla, who played quarterback and punted for the Flying Dutchmen, closed his collegiate career by earning LVC’s Unsung Hero award. Zarilla set LVC single-season records for passing yards (2,409) and touchdowns (22) as he completed 56% of his passes.
South Western alums Jason Gigous and Jeff Hacker also received awards. Gigous earned the Hammer Hit Award, given to the defensive player who consistently hits that hardest, for his work as an inside linebacker.
Hacker, a freshman, was one of three to earn Service Player of the Year awards, given to players who show outstanding dedication and drive in helping the varsity team prepare for their opponents in practice.
Former York Catholic standout Kady Schrann, above right, poured in a career-high 29 points as the Commodores defeated LSU, 81-72, on Sunday.
The win moved Vandy’s record to 16-5, 4-4 in SEC play.

Ed Reisinger, a 1988 Eastern York graduate, was at the game and sent us this picture of his daughter, Helen, with Schrann. He wrote in his email:
“I live here in Nashville, and it’s going to be fun watching Kady play over the next four years. … A great young lady for my daughter to watch and inspire! Austin Tillotson and Andrew Nicholas also played at Vanderbilt when Monmouth visited earlier this year. … Great to see all these recent York County players having so much success on the DI level.”

Nathan Bollinger, an Eastern York graduate, scored 50 points in an overtime victory vs. Wilkes University on Saturday.
Sophomore guard Nathan Bollinger set a Delaware Valley College single-game record by pouring in 50 points, including the game-tying 3-pointer with 2.1 seconds remaining in regulation, as the host Aggies rallied for a 95-85 overtime victory against Freedom Conference frontrunner Wilkes University on Saturday in Doylestown.
The win improved Delaware Valley’s record to 4-15 overall and 1-7 in the conference while the Colonels dropped their second straight game and fell to 13-5 and 6-2.
Bollinger, an Eastern York graduate, hit 15-of-26 shots from the field, including a 6-for-13 effort from 3-point land, and was 14-for-16 from the foul line. The 50 points broke the previous Aggie mark of 44 set by Joe Butts against Muhlenberg College in 1989, and it also tied for the fifth-highest, single-game scoring total in MAC (Freedom Conference and Commonwealth Conference) history.
It also was the biggest output in the conference since 2006. Bollinger also added five rebounds, five assists and two steals in 44 minutes of action.
Indoor or outdoor doesn’t seem to matter to the YAIAA alumni duo of Ian Melhorn and Dan Johnson, who are continuing their outstanding track careers as seniors at East Stroudsburg University.
Melhorn, an Eastern York grad, recently set the ESU record in the 60m dash and Johnson, a York Suburban alum, reached the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark in the heptathlon at the Mountain Hawk Invite at Lehigh on Friday and Saturday.
Fresh off his PSAC Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week award, Melhorn ran a time of 7.00 seconds, one-hundredth faster than the record of 7.01 set by Asher Ashfield last season and two-hundredths faster than Melhorn’s previous personal best.
Johnson hit the provisional mark in the heptathlon for the third straight indoor season with 4,726 points, eclipsing the qualifying standard of 4,600. He challenged his own school record of 4,797.
