At York College

In this week’s news from York College:

Women’s soccer: Stephanie Rice, a Susquehannock grad, notched the game-winning goal in overtime as the Spartans knocked off 16th ranked Salisbury University in a Capital Athletic Conference game on Sunday.

In that same game, Erin Mummert (Spring Grove) converted a corner kick from Kaitlyn Harney (York Catholic), however that goal was disallowed because of a foul on York.

 

Rice.jpgRice (No. 9 in white above in photo from York College’s Steve Doemland) also scored in the Spartans’ 8-0 win over Gallaudet on Tuesday. Mummert recorded a pair of assists in that game.

Cross Country: For the second time this fall, former Northeastern (homeschool) athlete Melody Parshall was named the CAC women’s cross country Athlete of the Week.

The sophomore picked up her first individual win of the season and led the Spartans to the team title at the Goucher Invitational. Parshall, who has been YCP’s top finisher in all five races this season and has five Top 10 finishes.

Golf:  Cody Trabert (Central York) shot an 83 at the challenging Links of Gettysburg course on Tuesday, helping York finish sixth-of-11 teams at the Gettysburg College Fall Invitational. Adam Dupler (Red Land) shot an 85.

Also on the Spartan golf squad are sophomores Wes Dixon (Eastern York) and Gage Weaver (Spring Grove).

Field Hockey:  Casey Lawrence (Delone Catholic) scored her third goal of the season, keying York to a 3-2 win over Elizabethtown on Tuesday. Her former Delone teammate, Veronica Eltz, made a key defensive play in that game.

Jennifer Pabon (New Oxford) and Rachel Houck (Kennard-Dale) are also members of the Spartans’ hockey team.

Volleyball: With local talent Jana Arentz (Hanover), Alysse Beshore (Northeastern), Cortni Rentzel (Northeastern), Alisha Waltermyer (Red Lion) and Ashley Rineman (Delone Catholic), York’s 26-24, 25-16, 25-10 win at CAC foe Wesley College on Tuesday.

Men’s soccer: Jesse Derksen (Susquehannock) picked up his second huge win in a week on Monday when the Spartans topped Rutgers-Camden, 3-2. The freshman also earned a shutout in last week’s huge 2-0 home victory over then-No. 1 Messiah College.

Derksen is 4-0-1 on the season for the nationally ranked squad. He is joined on the Spartans by Jorden Messersmith, a 2009 Red Lion grad.
