Brittany Hicks leading the way at York College

Accustomed to winning big basketball games during her time at York Catholic, Brittany Hicks has brought her tenacious attitude to the Spartans of York College.

On Wednesday, Hicks scored 15 points and pulled down 15 rebounds in the Spartans 65-50 win at Hood College.

For the season, the sophomore is third on the team in scoring with 12.2 points per game and pulls down 7.7 boards per game. She is shooting 41.4 percent from the field and 83.3 percent from the free throw line.

But Hicks’ contributions are more than just numbers. She is quick to say that she hates to lose and shows she is wiling to run through a wall – or at least the opposition – for her team, something she has done a regular basis for York College, which is 11-3 overall and 5-1 in the Capital Athletic Conference.

Two baskets in .7 seconds produces crazy win for York College

On Wednesday, Jan. 11, the York College men’s basketball team did something that even a 35-year coaching veteran like Jeff Gamber has never seen before.

The Spartans trailed host Hood College by two points, but scored two baskets in the final .7 seconds (yes that is less than a second) to steal a 63-61 Athletic Conference victory.

“The end of this game was probably the best we have had in my 35 years here,” Gamber said. “Incredible is the only way to put it.”

Mo Oursler converted an offensive rebound with less than a second left, tying the game at 61. But saved his biggest heroics for last when the Blazers tried a long pass, that he let roll out of bounds without being touched.

Since no time went off the clock, York had one last chance under the Hood basket and Oursler lobbed a pass to Paul Kouvaris (20 points), who banked in a catch-and-shoot at the buzzer for the improbably win.

“The guys kept believing that we had a chance and then the heads-up play letting the ball roll,” Gamber said. “They had two guys on Paul, the pass was perfect, and Paul’s timing was perfect. It was unbelievable. One of the things you preach to the kids is fight to the last seconds. And if they didn’t believe it, they certainly do now.”

Here is a quick rundown of the final 28 seconds in the unbelievable finish.

Hood leads 59-54 when York’s Mitch Kemp drained a 3-pointer (28 seconds left) … A quick foul by Kemp led to two Blazer free throws and a 61-57 lead (28 seconds left) … Julian Watson answered with a layup cutting the lead to 61-59 (21 seconds left) … After a York timeout, Jeremy Skoloda stole a Hood pass (14 seconds left). York misses a shot, but Oursler grabs an offensive rebound and his quick put-back ties the game at 61 (o.7 seconds left) … Hood attempts a full court pass that Oursler alertly lets roll out of bounds (0.7 seconds left) … Oursler’s in-bounds pass hits Kouvaris, who banks in the game-winner (0.0) to the most improbably of finishes.

“The 3-pointer by Mitch gave us the thought we can win,” Gamber said. “It was a series of smart plays by Mo. To tie it with .7 to go, you are thinking you are going to overtime.”
