Life as a Cashier

| | Comments (2)

With my hectic life and packed schedule, I have come to the realization that I have been neglecting our blog site! Yes, its true, my last entry was our March articles! So let me give you a little update on my life in the last month....

For the most part working has taken over my life. In an effort to save money to pay for the insanely high expenses of college, I have become a slave to my job. Well not exactly, but I do work a lot during weeknights and weekends at Giant.

I was hired as a cashier but for the past couple of months I have mostly suffered through four hours on U-scan, watching various people attempt to use the self-checkout and then curse the machines because they can't figure out why their items aren’t scanning (usually it is because they haven't pressed the start button!) While this was amusing for a while, I can only take so much before becoming extremely bored. If any of you readers shop regularly at a grocery store, you have probably seen the U-Scan attendant and maybe you have empathetically asked yourself why they seem to be so unhappy. The answer is simple: watching people ring up their groceries is NOT interesting! It is extremely life draining to the point of actually wanting to do it for them rather than having to fix their mistakes.

I don’t want you to think that I don't like my job; I actually love it. I have been at Giant for almost a year and I cannot think of any other place I would want to work. I have thought about fast food or waitressing but that is definitely not my cup of tea. Working at the self-checkout is not really my favorite thing but I think being a cashier is fun. It is extremely simple, I get to talk to people, and I like ringing up groceries as opposed to just watching customers do it. It is comforting to see the same people week after week and knowing they prefer paper bags to plastic or remembering that they always forget their bonus card. A job is a job and whether or not I like it all depends on my attitude. The hours I waste on U-Scan are always rewarded every Friday when I get my paycheck and I will always like that.

I always feel bad for the U-scan person who has to help me when I can't find the right code for my produce in the picture catalog. I miss the cheat sheets they had on top of the machines before!

good for you. i think every person should work retail one day of their lives. i too am a cashier and sometime people can be so damn rude and nasty. they have no clue what we deal with. all those people, all those personalities, and all those attitudes. i work at a sheetz and our regular customers are great but sometimes we get a few strays who think we should bow to them and we are stupid. just be nice to us. thanks i feel better
