Graham crackers: The best for snacking or s'mores
By JENNIFER VOGELSONG, Daily Record/Sunday News
The Keebler Elves don’t do a bad job with graham crackers, but in this month’s blind taste test, the York Daily Record/Sunday News Teen Takeover staff voted Honey Maid the best of the crunchy bunch.
Generic store brand? Don’t even bother, they advise.
With summer campfires and car trips on the horizon, it’s important to know which graham cracker is best for sandwiching marshmallow and chocolate into a s’more or keeping the kiddos happy during a long drive.
As the teens evaluated the crunch-and-honey combinations of each brand, they got to wondering about the origins of these sweet crackers. So I went online to do a little research.
Not surprisingly, they were invented by a guy with the last name of Graham.
More surprisingly, Sylvester Graham created his “graham bread” in 1829 as a health food, the center of a vegetarian diet designed to suppress physical maladies and what he considered to be unhealthy carnal urges.
Who knew?
Of course, evolution being what it is, today’s mass-market graham crackers couldn’t be considered the base of any kind of healthy diet, since they’re now sweeter and made with refined flour rather than the coarsely ground wheat flour Graham used.
If you’re in search of something more akin to Graham’s original bread, you might find a modern relative at your local health-food store. Otherwise, crunch away on your sweet crackers. Just remember, they’re no longer a health food.

Olivia Frank, York Suburban Senior High School: 4. If childhood had a taste, this would be it. It’s crunchy and classically yummy. It does taste like it would go stale easily, however.
Nick Ryan, home-schooled: 5. As graham crackers go, this one is practically perfect. This cracker is just crunchy enough and has a pleasant graham/honey combination that will have you reaching for more.
Samantha Provenza, York Catholic High School: 3. Not bad. It has a sweet, honey taste. Also noted that this was the only graham cracker that had four vertical lines instead of intersecting lines, so it can be broken apart easier for mini s’mores.
Lily Kotansky, Susquehannock High School: 2. Dry. Slightly sweet. This cracker has a tolerable balance of crunchiness and flavor; enough to keep me eating.
Average rating: 3.5

Brand: Weis
Price: $2.15
Serving size: Two whole crackers
Servings per container: About 13
Nutritional information: 140 calories, 3 grams fat, 0 mg cholesterol, 120 mg sodium, 7 grams sugar, 24 grams carbohydrates, 2 grams protein

Olivia Frank, York Suburban Senior High School: 2. It has a very flaky texture to it (more so than the others). It tastes very similar to the first one. I can’t say I’m a big fan.
Nick Ryan, home-schooled: 0.5. This graham cracker suffers terribly by comparison to the first. When I sunk my teeth into its shell, the whole treat broke apart way too easily. Combined with its plain, unappealing taste, I’d have to say, leave this one on the shelf.
Samantha Provenza, York Catholic High School: 1.5. There was something about this one that I didn’t enjoy at all. It seemed to taste more like a Fig Newton than a honey-flavored cracker.
Lily Kotansky, Susquehannock High School: 3. Oh, wow. This cracker is buff. Really. I enjoy the layers of graham and I think it would make a perfect wall for a gingerbread house. The honey flavor is rather airy. It’s there, then it’s gone after a few bites.

Brand: Honey Maid
Price: $3.59
Serving size: Two whole crackers (eight segments)
Servings per container: About 13
Nutritional information: 130 calories, 3.5 grams fat, 0 mg cholesterol, 180 mg sodium, 8 grams sugar, 24 grams carbohydrates, 2 grams protein

Olivia Frank, York Suburban Senior High School: 5. This one makes me very happy. It has the most convincing honey flavor and more of a punch to the taste.
Nick Ryan, home-schooled: 4. This is not the tastiest graham cracker ever, but it’s still quite good. The “crunch” factor is perfect, with the cracker breaking smoothly and easily into your mouth. Mmmm. If I only had some milk ...
Samantha Provenza, York Catholic High School: 5. Delicious! Perfect blend of honey flavor and crunchy goodness. This put me in the mood for s’mores.
Lily Kotansky, Susquehannock High School: 5. Yes, yes, yes! Tasty goodness. The layering, the “crunch” factor and the flavoring combine to make the perfect graham cracker.
