Mika's debut sugary sweet

"Life in Cartoon Motion" is a flashy '80s outfit, glossed over with hot-pink lipstick.

It's Candy Land come to life, a sugar high for the Material Girl (and Boy) addict. It's a glitzy music video starring you, in your underwear, dancing and singing along.

Mika's 2007 debut album comes with a warning: listening to the man brings on sudden, spastic energy.

Mika, born Michael Holbrook Penniman, paints a children's book full of simple, colorful sounds and lyrics. And his British accent - not to mention his falsetto - add to each song's upbeat quality. Pop melodies ranging from the spoken word to a little hip-hop sprinkle the album.

Despite Mika's brilliant color wheel of sound, listeners may feel the need to step away from all the madness after overdosing on each song's musical variety.

The key track of the album, "Grace Kelly," sets the stage. Mika demonstrates his vocal range here, singing "I could be brown, I could be blue, I could be violet sky, I could be hurtful, I could be purple, I could be anything you like." The colors summarize Mika's mood: Playful.

Like a high-end fashion store, "Life in Cartoon Motion" is a wonderfully showy experience. Watch out, though - Mika is intense. He'll take over your speakers and sugarcoat your room with high-energy pop.
