Are bands selling out, or simply evolving?

My favorite band used to be Fall Out Boy. Their music was catchy, and I loved the lyrics. I spent hours comparing Stump's vocals to the actual lines. [If you have heard "Dance,Dance" and then looked up the lyrics, you should understand what I mean.] By the way, if you are not familiar with the rock music genre, this article could be more than a little confusing. Then again, rock is becoming pop. So nevermind.

Back to FOB. The band's newest CD "Infinity on High" sounds more than a bit like synthesized pop. I loved "Take This To Your Grave" but I have discovered that I like the albums less and less as more are released. I could give a plethora of examples of this horrid evolution of music artists that I call selling out.

Don't shoot me. Avril Lavigne is a great singer/songwriter. But, quite frankly, her latest album "The Best Damn Thing" makes me cringe. not because it's that horrible, but compared to her first two albums, it's sad.

Paramore used to be a harder, rock-based band. Hayley Williams, on lead vocals, is now being called "little avril." The band's latest album "RIOT!" does sound quite a bit like "Girlfriend." I do like the first song, "For a Pessimist, I'm Pretty Optimistic," but that's all I can say for this album. [That's remotely nice.]

New Found Glory started out as an energetic group of guys who looked like they had a blast with their music. Their lyrics were fun and relatable to teen experiences with upbeat, punky arrangments. It was more than fun to listen to, and to cover. I personally love covering "My Friends Over You." Please skip over "Coming Home," their latest album. Synthesized pop....sellouts...

Somehow I feel like I'm repeating myself.

AFI...How I could rant about AFI. Miss Murder caused quite a stir. Maybe because of Davey Havok's splash of blue eyeliner and sparkles. Maybe because of his Hitler-esque motions off of a rooftop in the music video. Either way. Look past this...interesting song.
Davey Havok is my hero. I will unashamedly admit that. His voice on "Sing the Sorrow" is jaw-dropping. If I met Davey Havok, I might pass out. Then again, I might give him a piece of my mind for releasing "Decemberunderground." What a comparison could be made between those two albums. They sound like different bands. If you would like to listen to AFI, try "Silver and Cold." Not "Miss Murder."

Writing about these music artists makes me depressed. Yes, they are well known and are making a living and, hey, they made it. Big time. They have become what every band of teenagers strives to be. They've got record deals, and world tours...What more could you want as a musician? But at the same time, at what cost? Did they lose what gave them the chance to make it? Their individuality. In everyone's fight to be unique, we all end up the same. I guess I'll just have to live with my limited music genre until these bands stop changing on me. [Not that I hate change, but, geez. Talk about drastic changes.]

Maybe as a follow-up to this I could write about bands that have stayed true to their roots. Bands that I can honestly say I love their latest material and their oldest. Hmm. Sounds like fun. Suggestions, anyone?

The Arcade Fire will cure your music blues. They're innovative and thought-provoking, and if you don't goosebumps while listening to "Intervention" on their new album, then I'll...give you a dollar or something. If you want something a bit more jumpy and fun, try the New Pornographers. That's my piece.

Bright Eyes. Conor O. doesn't let anyone get in his way. John Mayer. Now that I think about it, more low-key, low-energy bands keep 'it' the whole way through without selling out. But there are so many bands, and I'd like to think selling out means lots of people like them, which means they're good. But I don't like when they let the fame get to their heads, which you wouldn't know that easily. I don't like to automatically assume that. Hey, people change, and bands evolve. Just go back and listen to their old stuff. My final word
--> If the music is good, I'm gunna dance.

okay, like im a bigger than big fan of paramore and neither haley williams nor misery buisness are anything close to stupid avril lavigne.just saying./:

i can not beleive u said that hayley williams is like a "little avril" and that her songs sound like girlfriend you are defenatly WRONG!!!!!!! avrils a... not even going to say it but i feel like sewing u just 4 sayng that URRR!!!! I love paramore and know alot about them and hayley is nothing like avril ok good now i got my point across! ohh and clarissa (who ever she is) is write!

Yeah, I agree with you for the most part. You should have mentioned My Chemical Romance though. They've changed so much it's depressing XD.But there are a few bands that have kept their music fairly consistant :D
Such as: Three Days Grace, Magneta Lane, Marilyn Manson, and Metric. Just to name a few

I agree with the Fall Out Boy and AFI article thingys. I did enjoy take this to your grave and yet i cant stand Fall Out Boy now that Infinity on High. Who really likes to hear people complain about girls that have left them and their new boyfriends.... NO ONE!!! that's who.

One band to include for this page would probably have ot be eithe rAtreyu or yeah i'll say it Hawthorne Heights.

Okay, the Hayley Williams thing was nothing against Paramore. Or Hayley. I just was commenting that they have evolved and are very different than when they started out. I like the album a lot more now than when I first wrote this article. I guess it grows on you. I saw that a lot of people were calling her that and decided to include it. And I have to ask, did you like them before or after they became big?

Atreyu has changed a lot, but I still enjoy their music. Same with My Chemical Romance.

Uhm... i love Paramore before but way back when barely anyone knew who they were. I still enjoy Atreyu's stuff too its just they have soften up now that Brandon sings more. I'm not too fond of MCR anymore but thats just since I started like harder stuff.

One band everyone regaurdless of what you like should give props to for not changing is Between the Buried and Me. It even says "We won't change for anyone" on their myspace.

I LOVE FALL OUT BOY!!! THEY ARE MY FAVORITE BAND/MUSIC GROUP I HAVE EVER HEARD MUSIC FROM!!! AND I EXTREMELY LUV PETE!!! HE IS SOOOO HOT!

maybe some bands are "changing" the style or whatever because their testing out, what people like and what people want to "they should have never wrote that song!" I agree but don't agree, because sometimes change is good. Oh and by the way that "mini Avril" thing, no way, plus Girlfreind is nothing like a dong from paramore

Perhaps the people in the bands are actually growing up? When most of the bands wrote the songs on their albums, they were angry about so much stuff but now most of them are rich so they arent so angry, and their songs have a little less raw emotion. But Fall Out boy for one have progressed so far, their more recent lyrics are so beautiful, I love how they have so many layers of meaning.. And perhaps you've changed too, maybe you want something different from the music that you listen to than you wanted before. But its all change, and they never wrote the songs to please you specifically anyway ;]

PARAMORE IS THE BOMB!SO HA!!!

Wow. Well you are entitled to your opinion, but I like all of these bands and all of their songs. I like Decemberunderground way better than Sing The Sorrow. Etc. I think that bands are growing to be better not becoming less of a unique band because they sound different and in my opinion better. Sure technology probably fine tuned up the vocals and everything else but they sound just as great live anyways. Besides a lot of older albums from bands are really raw and sound like they are singing from a dumpster. Bands learn to grow together and make new and better things.
