Swimming goes high definition

First, it seized televisions. Next, it conquered radio airways. Now, the high definition phenomenon has found a new prey — swim goggles. That’s right, you can now see the glamorous underwater world (or, more likely, the depths of a pool) in high definition.

I’m not sure whether to laugh at or admire this new creation from Hammacher Schlemmer.

High definition definitely would be worthwhile if I was swimming around the Great Barrier Reef. Who wouldn’t want to see the colorful oceanic habitats in full intensity? On the other hand, if I was stranded swimming in a domestic indoor pool, the novelty of seeing really vivid blue water might fade quickly.

Being a curious person, I’ll probably end up with a pair of these eventually. Surprisingly, the smoke-colored goggles cost only $25; as long as they function with the capabilities of regular goggles, that seems like a pretty reasonable price. (According to the inventor, these goggles “offer the best comfort, visibility, fit and adjustability,” filter blue light and even protect against UV rays.)

Whether or not you will be swimming in some underwater paradise or a friend’s pool, HD goggles might just be wacky enough to try.
