Make the most of a carnival

| | Comments (0)

In the beginning, man could detect the coming of summer by rising temperatures and lengthening days.

Fast forward to the present, and Ferris wheels and cotton candy signify the season. However, the fun does not last. Carnivals are like desert mirages: They come and go, leaving a colorful memory amidst a dreary landscape. So you have to make the most out of the festival's short life span.

Use these tips . . . and remember that practice makes perfect.

1. Prepare. Get the facts. Find out dates, times, admission cost. This will make it easier to plan your visit.

2. Arrive early. You want to scope out the place. How many rides are there? What about food? Are the restrooms . . . tolerable? (Port-a-potties, anyone?)

3. Bring a buddy. Carnivals are fun because of the people. After all, who will you share the Ferris wheel with? Your mom? I think not!

4. Money, baby. Carnies are smart. They know people are willing to pay to play and ride. Be smart about this. Budget the money. You want to have enough for rides, food and games.

5. Games. They're fun but often rip-offs... Unless you're impressing that special someone or you think stuffed aliens are adorable, save your money.

6. Food. Eat after the rides. No one likes a puker.
