'Crows' Fly High With New Disc
"I'm a Russian Jew American/Impersonating African Jamaican/ What I want to be is an Indian," singer Adam Duritz proclaims on the Counting Crows' latest album "Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings," released earlier this year.
The album has a mix of pop-driven melodies and slower emotional tunes. The first half, "Saturday Nights," has guitar riff-a-palooza jams, while the second half, "Sunday Mornings," has wearing-your-heart-on-your-sleeve lyrics.
Though it's the first Counting Crows album in six years, the crew hasn't lost their touch at all. Dedicated fans will be more than pleased with their latest creation, and songs like "You Can't Count On Me" will surely invite new fans to come along for a ride with the Crows. Other stand-out tracks include the poppy "Hanging Tree" and the soft acoustic sound of "Washington Square."
As for the lyrics, Duritz is at the top of his game. With love-torn words in the piano ballad, "On a Tuesday In Amsterdam Long Ago," Duritz causes the listener to absorb his pain with a whiny-yet-powerful vocal sound.
Though the first set of "Saturday Nights" is a fun and uplifting sound for the Counting Crows, their highest moments appear in the mellow tracks of "Sunday Mornings." The album is a definite gem in the Counting Crows' repertoire and might easily be fans' favorite to date.
The Counting Crows have a solid compilation of songs here. If there is one thing Duritz shouldn't regret on Sunday morning, it should be this excellent collection.
