New Challenger muscling into dealerships

What is the epitome of American culture?

Apple pie? Check.

Baseball? Check.

Hot dogs and hamburgers? Check.

If you think there's something missing from that list, you must think like
the execs at the Chrysler-owned Dodge.

Due to hit dealerships at about the time you're reading this is the 2008
Dodge Challenger SRT8. The second coming of the muscle-car era is upon us.

The new offering from Dodge is based on Chrysler's LX platform, which
includes the Magnum wagon, the Charger sedan and the Chrylser 300. Only 6,400
are being produced for the 2008 model year, and each of those is spoken for.

The only model type being produced for the limited-production 2008 model
year is the SRT8 varied, which comes with all the bells and whistles, including
a 425 horsepower 6.1 liter HEMI V-8, complete with an engine block that is
painted orange, just like the original. In this, it's most potent form, the
Challenger will eclipse 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds on its way to a top speed of
168 mph.

According to Car and Driver magazine, the Challenger's performance will not
be limited to the drag strip, as were many of the original muscle cars. Despite
considerable heft (4,189 pounds), they say that the car possesses "tenacious
grip," as well as a "decent ride quality."

The Challenger also comes with a "performance features" display that tells
the driver various bits of information including 0-60 times, quarter-mile times,
60-0 braking distances and g-forces.

Lesser versions will be released for the 2009 model year, including an SE
model that will be powered by a 3.5 liter V-6 and an R/T model that will be 5.7
liter HEMI powered.

Pricing for the SRT8 is just about $40,000. 2009 prices have not been
announced.
