Stars align in 'Goodbye Blues'

In a musical universe filled with stars of the same style and sound, it's very unusual to find a band or singer to which the label "unique" can be ascribed (at least in a manner that is not another way of saying "too weird"). Even if a band happens to create an album that is both good and unique, the true wonder occurs when the follow-up albums are just as original and entertaining.

The Hush Sound's "Goodbye Blues," released after their 2005 and 2006 albums "So Sudden" and "Like Vines," happens to be one of those rarities. The retro feel (early 20th century, not '70s/'80s) combined with alternating male and female lead vocals give each song a different twist to avoid the common malady of all songs sounding as if they originated from the same mix.

The lyrics and beats won't bore listeners, either. Aside from the pleasant change of "take charge" themes - as opposed to the submissive, woe-is-me variety common to many current pop singers - upbeat, catchy tempos and lyrics ranging from creative to symbolic to amusing prove that substance and fun can be one in the same.

Fans of Death Cab for Cutie and Rihanna may finally be able to form a truce on the dance floor.
