Get pumped for 'Iron Man'
The 2008 superhero flick "Iron Man" is a box office banger and is definitely going to be a hard movie to surpass. In its opening weekend, it raked in $98,618,668, ranking No. 1 in the box office, and making it the 10th biggest movie opening weekend of all time.
Starring Robert Downey Jr., "Iron Man" is the tale of Tony Stark, a billionaire engineer who develops weapons for the military.
In the opening scene, Stark is riding in an Army convoy through Afghanistan when the convoy is suddenly taken under siege by terrorist missiles.
Stark is on the trip to demonstrate his newest creation, the Jericho, a cluster missile that can flatten small mountains. During the siege, he is rendered unconscious and taken captive by a terrorist group called The Ten Rings.
When Tony awakes, he is hooked up to a makeshift arc reactor, which is a smaller version of one of his own inventions. It releases electromagnetic waves to keep pieces of shrapnel (the metal from the missile that made him unconscious) from reaching his heart, which would result in his death.
While in captivity, Stark is forced to work with a scientist named Dr. Yinsen, who helps him create an armored suit. Under the watchful eye of his holders, Stark creates a suit equipped with missiles, jet propulsion, flame throwers and machine guns.
When he is finally rescued by the Air Force, he announces that his company will no longer create weapons of warfare. From that point on, he devotes himself to creating a newer version of the suit he created in the cave where he was held hostage.
With the help of his friend Lt. Col. James Rhodes (Terrence Howard) and personal secretary Ms. Pepper Pots (Gwyneth Paltrow), Iron Man goes on a journey to help those he has unintentionally put in harm's way for so long.
This DVD will definitely sell out as soon as it hits store shelves, but if I were you, I wouldn't wait that long to see it. "Iron Man" has set the standard for superhero action movies. It is a big-screen champion.
