Eileen Favorite has written a book in which tons of fairy tales jump out at you.
"The Heroines" is about a girl named Penny and her mother who owns a homestead where heroines come to stay.
At first, Penny is fascinated by all of the heroines. Her mother would read a new story and explain each one. After a while, Penny gets sick of her mother spending all of her time with the heroines and forgetting about her.
She runs into the woods - disobeying one of her mother's rules - and stays out way past the time she should have. Penny has second thoughts about disobeying mother, but when she turns around, it's too late. She gets kidnapped.
This book lets you see what happens to Scarlett O'Hara and Madame Bovary off duty. It is hilarious, serious and sad all at once.
Penny's favorite heroine is Franny Glass from "The Way Of The Pilgrims," but one day, venturing in the woods, Penny loses her. Franny was like a best friend to Penny, so living where there is no one to hang around with except for Albie, a druggie, Penny feels uncomfortable.
"The Heroines" is a great read for teens wanting an escape from reality. Sometimes you have to stop and think about what happens to the heroes in our favorite books. Maybe the books seem unreal, but in this book the side you would never expect comes out.
I loved the book - I read it and felt like I couldn't put it down. Maybe that could happen to you, too.
