I decided to join the high school swim team after being inspired by Michael Phelps in the Olympics. I was like “eh, it cannot be that hard. He makes it look easy and how hard can swimming really be.” Trust me it is a lot harder than it looks.
On the second day of practice the coach asked my name and I swiftly replied “Miss. Phelps.” The coach went on to crack jokes about my swimming ability and how he got all of the genes. And was he right. I now have a new appreciation for all swimmers and especially Michael Phelps and his accomplishments in the Olympics.
My swimming is awful….
The dives are a lot harder than Michael Phelps makes them look. The first time that I went to do a start I jumped off the blocks feet first. The next several times (basically every time) I just fell into the pool. My friends equate my diving to a dinosaur entering the water. The actual swimming is challenging also. In the butterfly I cannot get my feet to go up and down together. In the breast stroke my left foot doesn’t turn out. When I swim backstroke I get water up my nose and in my mouth. Not fun. My flip turns are all wrong too. I normally get water up my nose which burns or I flip like sideways and only push off the wall with one foot.
It is a mess.
With the first meet in less than a week, I am very nervous. Ahh, I don’t even want to think about it.
