Freudenberger tales add luck to life

Over the summer, a mentor advised me to pick up "Lucky Girls," a collection of short stories by Nell Freudenberger. I was skeptical, but became captivated by the eponymous first, a tale of a young American who leaves her home to live with the love of her life in India until his untimely death.

Some of the stories try too hard at times to be short stories, like "Outside the Eastern Gate" and even "The Orphan," which makes them seem slightly forced. Most, though, draw one into the Eastern world.

As one who never thought twice about Thailand and India, I am now enthralled with these countries. Count the title story and "The Tutor" among the best narratives of the lot. And remember: You're lucky to be seeing this side of the world with this talented author.
