My name is Sarah Crawford, I’m 14 and a freshman at Central York High School. People say everyone is unique and I find this to be extremely true. With every person I’ve met, it seems that they have their own special attributes that really define who they are as a person. In my 14 years, I’ve discovered my own attributes, my love of writing and my experinces in traveling the world.
Ever since I can remember, I’ve adored the world of literature. Instead of my parents begging for me to read, they begged me to stop and do something else. From there, reading led me into a love of writing. Sci-fi, historical fiction, fantasy, it doesn’t matter what the genre is, I love writing them all. In elementary school, I began submitting some of my stories to the Junior Dispatch. In all, I had one poem, one horror story and one fantasy story published in the newspaper. My biggest writing accomplishment was in 8th grade when I won second place in the York County Heritage essay contest. Now, I’m happy to add the Teen Takeover to my list of writing achievements.
When I was nine months old, I went on my first cruise to Bermuda. Since then, I’ve traveled on more than 20 cruises, including three Trans-Atlantic crossings. It’s hard to understand how vast a world we live in until we actually explore it. One of the most eye opening places I’ve visited was the Amazon Rainforest. The people relied heavily on the river for food and water and their homes were made from trees they had to chop down themselves. Communication with the outside world was close to nothing. It made me realize that even though we are all on the same planet, some places seemed worlds apart from my own home. They didn’t have TV, computers, or even running water. And yet, these people seemed happy and content with the way they were living. It made me really appreciate what I have. Other than exploring the Amazon, I’ve also been to Central America, South America, Galapagos, Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. All of these places had their own culture which was so unique and special, I wanted to stay forever. But of course, I always found my way back to York.
Everyone has attributes. Things that make them the way that they are. Whether it be a passion for sports, a love of photography, or, an eagerness to act. They’re all characteristics that set us apart from others. When all is said and done, I’m proud to say that I’m Sarah Crawford and I love to write and travel.
