When most people hear the word, McDonald’s, they think of greasy, calorie-ridden, cheaply priced food. Although that my have been true just a couple of years ago, it’s surprising to see how much of a change this famous fast food restaurant has under gone recently.
One of these notable changes was the introduction of McCafe. The first one originally opened in Australia, in 1993, but didn’t reach the United States until 2001. Still, it took eight more years for the new addition to McDonald’s to spread throughout the country. Adding a cafe to a fast food restaurant was a major leap in the industry; something that other companies had never considered doing before! It was also a great way for McDonald’s to continue appealing to the ever-changing consumer. Introducing smoothies, lattes, cappuccinos and other drinks not only proved that the golden arches was keeping up with the times, but that the restaurant wasn’t just focused on burgers.
Another addition that revolutionized the fast food industry was the addition of salad to the menus. McDonald’s, of course, was the first to introduce their variety of greens and the competitors soon followed suit. What made this so interesting was that for the first time, fast food was becoming something that offered a healthy option, too. Now, for those who didn’t want to chow down on a McDouble, they could choose among a selection of salads.
Most recently, McDonalds has added its biggest change of all. The new Under 400 Calories Menu, lists over 30 foods that are, well, under 4oo calories! This is the company’s latest attempt to really prove to the consumer that its food isn’t as unhealthy as they might think. In fact, some of the items on the list are shocking! For example, menu items like the vanilla ice cream cone, which seems like it would total over 1000 calories, turn out to be just 170 calories! Just as incredible is if someone were to eat a hamburger, small french fry, and coffee for dinner, the entire meal would only be 480 calories.
Through it all, I think it’s true to say that McDonald’s is so successful because it’s willing to continually change and adapt its menu. Whatever is booming in the food industry, McDonald’s is not afraid to jump on the bandwagon and grab the reigns. Still, is McDonald’s ever-changing menu healthy enough to eat every day? No, but consuming the food in moderation isn’t as unhealthy as it used to be. After all, this new Under 400 Calorie Menu is enough to make people everywhere say, “I’m loving it.”
