Yesterday, I found yet another reason to be mad at America.
I love(d) k-pop. With a passion. Thanks to a Zenkaikon workshop and several crazy teenagers, I was hooked. It was maybe a year and a half ago that I became obsessed.
And now, Gangnam Style. A.K.A. Some of the worst k-pop I have ever experienced.
America, however, loves it. Maybe it’s because of the dance. Maybe it’s because of the video ruthlessly objectifying women’s bodies. I don’t know. All I know is that I legitimately like Justin Beiber more than Psy. It’s really hard to get to the top of my Musicians I Hate list that quickly. Also, I have to mention how Psy stands for Penn State York in my head. So yes, the name is stupid, too.
Psy’s popularity is mostly upsetting he is bad, and there are, you know, actually good-ish k-poppers out there.
So I’m here to introduce you to the K-pop people who deserve the credit for some really awesome music.
1. Daesung of Big Bang
This kid has the smoothest voice ever. It’s very calming. I listened to Baby Don’t Cry, his solo song on a special edition CD, about a bajillion times (actually 32 times, according to my iTunes).
Okay, I have to admit that these girls do not sound good at all when performing live. Like, at all. But their songs are such fun crosses between rude, sassy, heartbroken, and I’m-way-cooler-than-you-ness. My favourites are I AM THE BEST (yes, in all caps) and It Hurts, which is an amazing music video in which there is beautiful hair. LOVE.
3. Girls’ Generation
The silliest girls on the planet all went to a convention and decided to form a music group. And Girls’ Generation happened. This is the preppiest, poppiest k-pop out there, ’nuff said.
OH OH OH OH OH.
Such a jam.
Okay, so I kind of have a love-hate relationship with this guy. But Wedding Dress is one of the better k-pop songs out there. Or so I recall.
5. SuJu / HyunA
I’m squashing these next two together because neither of them deserve that much credit.
SuJu, or Super Junior, is not a good k-pop group, but they would have been Psy if their song Sorry Sorry had been released more recently. Seriously, the dance is COMPLETELY ridiculous. And the song is COMPLETELY catchy.
Also, in SuJu’s early days, they did song’s like Cooking Cooking, which is just way too much fun to laugh at.
HyunA has only one song that I like, but I really like it. The idea is nutty and a little KyaryKyaryPamyu-ish. Behold, Bubble Pop!
And so you see why Psy should be booted off the charts.
To conclude, a real live old person being way more awesome than Psy could ever be:
